Everything We Know About 13 Reasons Why Season 4

’13 Reasons Why’ is an American teen drama web series that airs on Netflix. The show first premiered on March 31, 2017 and is based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Jay Asher. Brian Yorkey developed the show for Netflix, and the project is backed by July Moon Productions, Kicked to the Curb Productions, Anonymous Content, and Paramount Television.

The series follows a recounting of the events that led to the suicide of a high school girl Hannah Baker, as heard on the tapes she recorded, by a boy named Clay, who was in love with her. The show stirred major controversy upon release for the depiction of the scene of the suicide and polarized viewers in both camps, who either argued in praise of the show’s realism or spoke against it, stating the risks of showing suicide on-screen.

The show has seen three successful seasons so far. Here’s everything we know about its fourth season.

13 Reasons Why Cast: Who is in it?

The cast of ‘13 Reasons Why‘ is led by Dylan Minnette who plays Clay Jensen, a high school student who is obsessed with her close friend’s, Hannah, suicide. Katherine Langford plays Hannah Baker, a teenager whose suicide and recorded audio cassettes spark the events of the series. Christian Navarro stars as Tony Padilla, Clay’s best friend at Liberty High. Alisha Boe is cast as Jessica Davis, a student who starts attending Liberty High at the same time as Hannah. Brandon Flynn plays Justin Foley, a student at Liberty High who comes from an abusive family. Justin Prentice plays Bryce Walker, a student from a rich family and the captain of the football team at Liberty High.

In season 4, you can definitely expect lead players to be back. So, Dylan Minnette, Christian Navarro, Alisha Boe will return. Of course, Justin Prentice won’t be back because (SPOILER ALERT) Bryce Walker gets murdered in season 3. His killer’s identity and motive being the season’s main conflict.

13 Reasons Why Plot: What is it about?

’13 Reasons Why’ centers around two storylines which are linked by the tragic suicide of Hannah Baker. One storyline goes into the aftermath of her suicide, and how various characters who had interacted with her, are affected by this, and how they deal with her death. However, through the tapes that Hannah made, 13 tapes placing the blame on various people whose actions and behavior drove her to suicide and where the show gets its name from, we also see the past, that is, the events that all led up to her suicide.

The suicide seems to be a looming factor that permeates the entire show, and Hannah is always around the corner like a watchful spirit, ensuring that even if justice is not delivered, there is an acknowledgment of actions. Naturally, the graphic nature of the suicide, and the way the show’s narrative moves has drawn most of the viewers’ attention.

Season 3 is set eight months after the end of season 2. Even after months has passed since Tyler’s attempted massacre at the Spring Fling, Clay and his friends are struggling to cope with the cover-up. However, the tensions reach a boiling point during Liberty High’s Homecoming season, resulting in the murder of Bryce Walker, school’s football captain. The students of Liberty High once again find themselves under spotlight as investigations into Bryce’s death begins. Clay becomes person of interest in the murder. As cops close in on Clay, it soon becomes evident that he did not kill Bryce. Ultimately Clay is arrested, but when the full story of the brawl at homecoming game emerges, everyone finds out the real truth behind the murder.

The finale of the third season brings an end to the Bryce Walker mystery. The group dodges the bullet with Ani’s help who cleverly dumps the blame on Monty. They all celebrate at Monet’s and wish for things to be better from now on. But their problems haven’t ended yet. There are loopholes in their stories that will demand explanations. They have made mistakes that will come back to haunt them. The stage for the ’13 Reasons Why’ season 4 is set by two events. The first one is the guns. After helping Tyler curb his killing spree emotions, Tony and Clay dump the guns in the river. They eventually find their way to the cops. The group had covered up the whole thing and were worried that it might come out. It doesn’t happen in the third season, and we are led to believe that this subplot has met an end. But the ending proves us otherwise. The next season will build up on this investigation and will once again bring the teens of Liberty High in crosshairs with the law.

Another thing is Monty’s alibi. His death proves useful in framing him for Bryce’s murder. But he still has an alibi. He shared that night with Winston, who isn’t happy with what Ani did. What if he finds out the worst time to bring up the alibi and reopen the investigation? Does that put a target on his back? Will Winston die next?

13 Reasons Why Season 4 Release Date: When will it premiere?

’13 Reasons Why’ Season 3 premiered on August 23, 2019 on Netflix. The question in every fan’s mind right now is: will 13 Reasons Why be renewed for a fourth season. The good news for the fans is that on August 1, 2019, three weeks before season 3 premiere, Netflix renewed the show for a fourth season. The bad news is that season 4 will also be show’s last.

’13 Reasons Why’ is one of the most popular shows, if not the most popular, on Netflix. So, it makes sense for the streaming giant to keep milking the show and riding on its popularity. But also well documented is the fact that Netflix doesn’t like to renew shows beyond three or four seasons. More importantly, though, there’s not much left in the story that can be explored further beyond four seasons.

Even though, no release date was announced for the final season, considering that the showrunners are already working on it, you can expect ’13 Reasons Why’ Season 4 premiere date to be sometime in August, 2020.  We will update this section as soon as we hear more.

Should You Watch 13 Reasons Why?

Mostly yes! ’13 Reasons Why’ is one of the most smartly packaged shows out there, especially its first season. The sophomore season becomes a little insufferable thanks to the legal embroilments which tones down the powerful messages that the initial season was not afraid to shoot across to the viewers. The show took on a lot of pertinent and insidious issues that people face in high school, and at other stages of life as well. The show also brings forth the issue of sexual assault and sexual harassment on school campuses.
