Preview: 9-1-1: Lone Star S01 E05

9-1-1 Lone Star‘ is a show about firefighters that derives its appeal from the profession’s life-or-death emergencies as means to heighten its stakes. A format like this is nothing new and has been practiced by medical shows and series about law enforcement organisations routinely.

Having begun last month, the show follows a bunch of firefighters working at a fire station in Austin. The characters regularly juggle their personal life and professional obligations as they try to save countless lives from harrowing accidents.

The protagonist is Owen Strand who moves from Manhattan to Austin at the beginning of the series. He also gets diagnosed with lung cancer and has been shown mulling over the decision to get a chemotherapy treatment which will affect his beloved hair. Strand was seen bonding with his co-worker, Judd over his therapy since Judd has been going to one himself for PTSD. Apart from that, Strand has tried to keep his cancer diagnosis a secret, most prominently from his son, TK. However, he does finally manage to opt for cancer treatment in the third episode.

TK, on the other hand has been trying to recover from his suicidal tendencies and drug addiction. In the first episode itself, he relapses after finding out that his boyfriend is in love with someone else, before proposing to him. Fortunately, he meets another charming man, Carlos who he starts to see. The two have an awkward first date after which Carlos makes an attempt for a more magical second one. However, TK is not ready to begin a new relationship so soon.

Michelle, on the other hand has been trying to find her missing sister and is quite desperate to do so. In fact, she even pays for a supernatural ritual in hopes of finding her sister. On the other hand, a Muslim firefighter, Marjan has been facing flak for her hair getting uncovered in the process of saving people’s lives. She has been portrayed trying to come to terms with her religious beliefs because of that, since being a devout Muslim makes her feel like she is a part of something bigger.
