Naturally, you must be wondering about where you can see ‘Ad Astra’ online. We are here to tell you that, but first, let us walk you through the film’s plot.

What is Ad Astra About?

‘Ad Astra’ places us in the future when the solar system is experiencing hits from power surges of an unknown origin. It threatens the future of human life. Major Roy McBride survives an incident on a giant space antenna, due to one of these surges. Roy is the son of famed astronaut H. Clifford McBride. He is informed by SpaceCom, the US Space Command, that the source of the surges has been traced to the ‘Lima Project’ base. The project had been sent some 26 years ago, under Clifford’s leadership, to search for intelligent life in the furthest corners of the solar system. It had disappeared 16 years back, while in orbit around Neptune.

Roy is informed by SpaceCom that they believe Clifford, his father, is still alive. Roy is tasked with traveling to Mars to establish contact with him. He is joined by an old associate of his dad’s, Colonel Pruitt. Thus begins the epic journey, whose first leg includes taking a commercial flight to the moon. There, while traveling across no man’s land in rovers, Roy and the team are attacked by scavenging pirates. Pruitt is left in a bad state though Roy manages to get out alive.

Roy then transfers to a SpaceCom flight going to Mars. However, they receive a distress signal from a Norwegian biomedical research space station. Upon boarding, they are attacked by an aggressive baboon that manages to kill the ship’s captain. Once again, Roy narrowly escapes. The adventure continues even though the Mars landing is slightly jeopardized by another of the power surges. However, on Mars, Roy meets Helen Lantos and is tasked with recording voice messages to send to the Lima base, hoping Clifford will respond. Roy succeeds in getting a response when he goes off-script. However, he is taken off the mission since his personal connection might pose a psychological risk to himself and the overall success of the mission.

Helen reveals to Roy that she is a native of Mars and has been to Earth only once. She also shows him classified files that reveal Clifford’s crew mutinied against him, trying to go back to earth. As a result, Clifford ended up killing them all by turning off their life support systems. Helen’s parents were among the crew members who were killed. Despite this, she believes that only Roy should confront him. Meanwhile, she knows that the pilots who brought Roy to Mars plan on destroying the base with a nuclear payload. Helen helps Roy escape to the rocket taking off for the base.

Onboard the rocket, Roy is discovered, and in the resulting altercation with the crew, Roy kills all of them, leaving him in charge of the entire ship. During the following journey, Roy has a lot of time to introspect and focus on his relationships with his father and estranged wife. The loneliness begins to get to him mentally, but he finally reaches the Lima base. While trying to enter the base, another surge takes place, but Roy manages to get in safely. He attaches the nuclear payload himself and confronts his father.

It turns out that the surges have been coming from the antimatter power source which was destroyed during the mutiny. Clifford, the sole survivor, explains how he has continued to work on the project all these years since he refuses to give up hope about finding non-human intelligent life forms. Roy wants his father to come back with him, but Clifford is unwilling to return to earth. He heads towards deep space. Roy meanwhile, returns to his ship and uses another of the power surges to propel his ship towards home.

Having retrieved his dad’s data, it suggests that humans are the only intelligent life form in the universe. Roy finds the desire to connect with those who are close to him and heads to earth, seemingly reconciling with his wife.
