When Will A.P. Bio Return For Season 3?

‘A.P. Bio’ is an American comedy television series that airs on NBC. Created by comedian Mike O’Brien, who used to serve as a staff writer for famed variety show ‘Saturday Night Live’, the show follows a disgraced philosophy professor who is forced to teach at a high school to earn a living.

A pretty new show, Season 1 of ‘A.P. Bio’ premiered on February 13, 2018, and received mixed reviews from television critics but decent reviews from audiences. Despite the mixed response, NBC renewed the show for a second season, which premiered on March 7, 2019. Fans of the show are hoping for news on a third season. Here’s everything we know about it thus far.

A.P. Bio Cast: Who is in it?

‘A.P. Bio’ has a pretty impressive cast and has ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ and ‘That ‘80s Show’ star Glenn Howerton playing the role of the main character, disgraced Harvard philosophy professor Jack Griffin, who is forced to take up a job as an Advanced Placement Biology teacher at the Whitlock High School.

Other main cast members in the show include Lyric Lewis as Whitlock High School history teacher Stef Duncan, Mary Sohn as Whitlock High School art teacher Mary Wagner, Jean Villepique as Whitlock High School home economics teacher Michelle Jones, Patton Oswalt as Principal Ralph Durbin, and Paula Pell as Principal Durbin’s secretary Helen Henry Demarcus. Finally, Tom Bennett plays the role of Jack’s nemesis and arch rival, Harvard scholar Miles Leonard.

The show also has several recurring cast members many of who play the roles of students at the Whitlock High School. Some of them include Jacob McCarthy as Devin, Aparna Brielle as Sarika Sarkar, Nick Peine as Marcus Kasperak, Allisyn Ashley Arm as Heather, Eddie Leavy as Anthony Lewis, Charlie McCrackin as Coach Dick Novak, Jacob Houston as Victor Kozlowski, and Tucker Albrizzi as Colin McConnell.

Further, ‘A.P. Bio’ also features a few stars appearing as guests, including Collette Wolfe as Meredith, Niecy Nash as Kim Burke, Taran Killam as Mr. Vining, Mark Proksch as Philip, and Christopher Lloyd as Melvin.

We expect most of these cast members to make comebacks and reprise their roles in season 3.

A.P. Bio Plot: What is it about?

In essence, ‘A.P. Bio’ is a revenge story told in the form of a comedy. It follows disgraced Harvard philosophy professor Jack Griffin after he loses his dream job to his rival, Miles, and is forced to head back to Toledo, Ohio, where he starts living in his deceased mother’s house and takes up a job as an Advanced Placement Biology teacher at the Whitlock High School.

Although reluctant at first, Jack grumpily starts his new job and makes it abundantly clear to his students that he will not be teaching biology. Instead, Jack introduces his brilliant honour-roll students to his unorthodox teaching methods, and starts using them to try and exact revenge on his nemesis Miles. This, of course, isn’t easy as the school principal, Ralph Durbin, tries to assert his superiority over Jack almost all the time, thereby constantly interrupting his schemes. Yet, Jack is hardly someone who you can dominate, and he ends up giving Principal Durbin a really hard time.

As the show progresses, Jack eventually ends up getting his wish, and takes revenge on Miles. Once Miles is out of the way, Jack is left with no purpose, and his new purpose becomes writing the best philosophy book to ever come out of Toledo. Further, despite Jack’s wishes to leave Toledo and go back to his life of scholarly luxury, he finds himself slowly becoming part of the community and consequently, his caustic attitude towards his co-workers and students start to give way to something more pleasant.

While the premise of the show is a fairly simple one which probably uses the bad teacher trope a bit too much, the show does have some genuinely funny moments. However, despite having great potential, the entire show doesn’t live up to it owing to its inability to use its plot to its advantage.

The Hollywood Reporter has aptly summed it up, writing, “As a TV show, ‘A.P. Bio’ has nearly everything you’d want in a comedy, including a solid premise, a great cast and a particular visual style. The only thing holding it back is the small quibble that it’s not actually all that funny.” Other publications like The New York Times have not been as kind to the show, and have criticized it harshly, saying, “There’s never been a worse time for a show about an abusive man coercing teenagers into sour sexual discourse and insisting they keep his disturbing behavior a secret. And yet Thursday night brings the arrival of NBC’s ‘A.P. Bio’, an abrasive sitcom that isn’t merely unfunny, it’s also deeply unpleasant.”

Unsurprisingly, ‘A.P. Bio’ has a not-so-great score of 65% on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has found more takers among audiences, and it enjoys a decent rating of 7.1/10 on IMDb.
