Although it first premiered on Sky1 in October 2017, the German neo-noir crime series ‘Babylon Berlin’ gained international recognition after seasons 1 and 2 debuted on Netflix on January 30, 2018. The most expensive German series managed to earn critical acclaim and audiences’ approval, which paved the way for a third season. Based on the bestselling mystery series by Volker Kutscher, the show follows a WWI veteran turned Cologne inspector Gereon Rath, and an emancipated criminologist Charlotte Ritter, as they embark upon a mission to rid Berlin of crimes during the Weimar Republic in 1929.

The period thriller has been lauded for meticulously capturing the spirit of the socio-political turmoil in the 1920s Germany by making use of historical elements with a tinge of dramatic fiction. Right since season 3 premiered on Netflix, fans who are done bingeing are anxiously waiting to know when will Babylon Berlin Season 4 release. Well, here’s everything we know.

Babylon Berlin Season 4 Release Date

‘Babylon Berlin’ Season 3 premiered on January 24, 2020, and concluded on February 28, 2020, on Sky1. ‘Babylon Berlin’ Season 3 dropped in its entirety on Netflix on February 28, 2020. All 12 episodes are available for streaming on Netflix.

As far as season 4 is concerned, here’s what we know. Over the years, the show has managed to gain a massive fan-following and has also received several accolades, including the Adolf Grimme Awards, which is touted as the “German TV Oscar.” Plus, there is still a lot of arcs; the makers can choose to adapt to screen, from Kutscher’s ‘Gareon Rath’ crime series.

Although there is no official announcement yet while filming the third season, the creators confirmed that season 4 is in the pipeline, and the production will commence after season 3. Therefore, the chances of the show coming back for season 4, is pretty high. If everything works out, we expect ‘Babylon Berlin’ to release sometime in January 2021 on Sky1, followed by a Netflix release in February 2021.

Babylon Berlin Season 4 Cast: Who is in it?

Except for a few, most of the characters are set to reprise their role in season 4.

‘Generation War’ fame Volker Bruch will be returning to play the role of police commissioner Gereon Rath, the WWI veteran, who is suffering from PTSD. Joining him as Charlotte Ritter is Liv-Lisa Fries. Charlotte is a police clerk who aspires to be a detective.

Apart from the two leads, the other returning characters include Severija Januska as Svetlana Sorokina, Lars Eidinger as Alfred Niesen, and a few others. We can also expect to see several new faces in the fourth season. Matthias Brandt, who plays August Benda, and Leonie Benesch, who essays the character of Greta Overbeck, might not return for season 4. As Bruno Walter’s fate is sealed in season 3, he will not return in season 4.

Babylon Berlin Season 4 Plot: What can it be About?

Season 3 is loosely based on Kutscher’s crime novel, ‘The Silent Death.’ It is set in 1929 when the silent movie era is being etched out by the introduction of talkies. The season follows Rath and Ritter, as they try to solve a murder mystery of a female actor who dies while filming a performance. Set amidst the tragic Black Friday stock market crash and a failing democracy under the Nazi rule of Adolf Hitler, the season throws light on the events created by the clash between the secret organization of the German Reichswehr army and several communist political groups.

In season 4, we can expect to see Rath and Ritter, solving another murder mystery, in a Nazi-infested Berlin, while also dealing with their personal issues.
