When in need of a dark, crime-drama that has a troubled lead trying to solve a disturbing crime, turn towards ‘Baptiste’. It is a spin-off of another mystery-drama, ‘The Missing’, which follows Julien Baptiste solving the cold cases of missing people. The success of ‘The Missing’ made Baptiste a popular character, which made the showrunners realise that they could take a more intimate approach with him.
While the story of the parent show focuses more on the case and the events surrounding the crime, the spin-off takes a character-centric course. Both the series have been created and written by Harry and Jack Williams. Börkur Sigpórrson and Jan Matthys have directed the series while John Griffin has produced it. Well, after a successful first season run, here’s all you need to know about Baptiste season 2.
Baptiste Season 2 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
Ever since the announcement of the spin-off, the fans had been eagerly waiting for their favorite detective to return to their screens, and what a long wait that was! After two whole years, ‘Baptiste’ aired and exceeded the expectations of both audience and critics, alike. The Guardian’s review described it as a “slow-burning spin-off that draws you into a darkly compelling plot”.
The series was also a rating winner for the network and brought high numbers throughout its six-episode run. With such success, it is no surprise that the series has been renewed for another season. The first season ended on some life-altering cliff-hangers for the characters and the story ahead promises more drama and intrigue than its first installment.
As of now, no official date has been announced. However, considering the release pattern of its parent series, we expect a similar two-year-long gap. Our best estimate is that ‘Baptiste’ Season 2 might release sometime in February 2021.
Baptiste Season 2 Cast: Who Can Be In It?
The role of Julien Baptiste is played by Tchéky Karyo, who reprises the role from ‘The Missing’. A César Award winner, Karyo has also worked in ‘La Balance’, ‘The Name of the Rose’, ‘The Patriot’, ‘The Good Thief’ and ‘GoldenEye’, among others. Tom Hollander appears in the role of Edward Stratton, the uncle of the missing girl. He is a BAFTA and Olivier Award-winner who has worked in ‘The Night Manager’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Hanna’.
Anastasia Hille plays the role of Julien’s wife, Celia. A BAFTA-nominated actress, she has worked in ‘The Fear’, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, ‘A United Kingdom’ and ‘Trial and Retribution’. Jessica Raine plays the role of Genevieve Taylor. She is also known for her work in ‘Call the Midwife’, ‘Patrick Melrose’, ‘Partners in Crime’ and ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’. Clare Calbraith plays the character of Claire. Her acting credits include ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Requiem’ and ‘The Alienist’.
Additional cast includes Talisa Garcia as Kim Vogel, Trystan Gravelle as Greg, Anna Próchniak as Natalie Rose, Barbara Sarafian as Martha Horchner, Alec Secăreanu as Constantin, Nicholas Woodeson as Peter and Boris Van Severen as Niels Horchner.
While the main cast is set to return in the second series, there are some other characters that might see an increment in their roles. Baptiste’s son Niels, who is played by Boris Van Severen, may return in a bigger capacity. His difficult character allows another complicated edge to the Baptiste family and presents the prospects of great developmental arc on his part. We might also see Jessica Raine returning to reprise the role of Genevieve Taylor, but we can’t say the same thing for Tom Hollander’s Edward Stratton. There is also the chance of some familiar faces from ‘The Missing’ to make an appearance on ‘Baptiste’.
Baptiste Season 2 Plot: What Can It Be About?
The first season of ‘Baptiste’ not only tackles a missing person’s case (just as in ‘The Missing’) but also focuses on the tumultuous personal life of the titular character. Julien has had a tumor removed from his brain and the experience of watching death come so close has altered his perspective about life. And then there is the return of his long-lost son, Niels. What kickstarts the events of the series is the disappearance of a sex worker in Amsterdam. Julien comes in contact with her uncle, Edward, to figure out what really happened. However, he is also cautious of him at the same time. Meanwhile, there is a Romanian on a brutal killing spree.
The first season ends with some drastic events in Julien’s life. Niels’ implication in corruption has landed him in jail, before which he also shot his mother. Julien will need time to sort out this mess, and his and Niels’ relationship might take center stage in the upcoming turn of events. Season 2 might also see Baptiste trying to solve a new case.
Even though he didn’t succeed in locating Cristina in the first season, the finale made it clear that this storyline has met its end, at least for now. Writers Harry and Jack Williams revealed that the second season will pay homage to The Missing. The story will span two time periods and it will be ‘even more ambitious than ever’.
‘Baptiste’ is a dark-thriller that you should watch if you are into the shows that chase a mystery. You can catch the first season of ‘Baptiste’ on BBC iPlayer. There is no trailer for the second season yet. We will update this section as soon as it drops. Meanwhile, here is the trailer of Season 1 to give you a glimpse into the world of Julien Baptiste.
