Burton Leon Reynolds Jr. was born on February 11, 1936. He is an American actor, director, producer and also the former football player. Burt Reynolds declined many roles that could have helped him in becoming successful on big screen. Back to Back failures pulled him towards the television. He first rose to stardom by starring in television series such as Gunsmoke (1962–1965) and Dan August (1970–1971).
His breakthrough film role was in 1972 in the flick Deliverance, where he portrayed the role of Lewis Medlock. Reynolds played the major role in a number of successful movies, such as The Longest Yard (1974), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), Semi-Tough (1977), Hooper (1978), Smokey and the Bandit II (1980), The Cannonball Run (1981) and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982). After giving many flop movies, Reynolds decided to make an appearance on Television. Reynolds did a guest role in the Pony Express episode, “The Good Samaritan”, which premiered in 1960.
After his success on television, he used his television fame for finding leading roles in low budget movies. He was even offered the role of James Bond, but he declined by saying “An American can’t play James Bond. It just can’t be done.” Later the role went to George Lazenby. Reynolds then produced the movie Shark! with director Sam Fuller. Reynolds made his successful debut in Deliverance and gained dishonor when he appeared in the April 1972 issue of Cosmopolitan. In 1997, he appeared in the movie Boogie Nights alongside actor Mark Wahlberg for which he received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor
In 1977, Reynolds declined the role of Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise, which later went to Harrison Ford. After realizing the failure on the big screen, he returned to television, starring in the sitcom Evening Shade (1990–1994). He refused to appear in Paul Thomas Anderson’s third film, Magnolia. In 2002, he provided his voice for Avery Carrington in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Burt Reynolds also made a guest appearance on the TV show Archer.
Reynolds was also a great singer. Reynolds released the album Ask Me What I Am in 1973 and sang along with Dolly Parton. He also opened the nightclub in Atlanta in late 1970. Reynolds married Judy Carne in 1963 and divorced in 1965. He then married Loni Anderson in 1988 and the couple divorced in 1993. Both adopted a son, Quinton. He is reported to be in a relationship with Sally Field.
