Variety shows had picked up quite a large amount of stigma to its name back in the 1980s and even before it, with some of its early production being dubbed as the most poorly made shows of all times – NBC’s ‘Pink Lady and Jeff’ as the prime example among them. The taste for variety shows with multiple acts of performance, musical, acting, or dancing had fallen out of fashion by the time it started redeeming its quality.
It was, therefore, a very strange when Netflix stepped up in the apparently lost game and sponsored the debut season of ‘Busted! I Know Who You Are’ in early 2018. It seems, however, that the Korean high-budget production and content quality as opposed to the declining western variety shows made the cut, turning in a major success in the west. It was a gamble for Netflix, producing a show with an all-Korean cast for the first time. It took a gamble, and it paid off.
The first season of Busted premiered on May 4, 2018 and continued for 10 episodes. The show was a major success, so much so that it received a swift renewal right after the first season finished airing. Busted season 2 released in November, 2019. Now, after two successful seasons, the question is, will there be a ‘Busted’ season 3? We will delve into that question, but first let’s quickly look into the details of the series.
Busted Cast: Who’s in it?
As mentioned earlier, Busted! is the first original production from Netflix with an all-Korean cast. And on top of this, the show is absolutely star-studded, and if you follow K-drama even a little bit, you will immediately recognize the faces that star this show, as the rag-and-tag band of detectives are all played by actors of tremendous repute in the Korean silver screen industry.
The cast consists of Jae-wook Ahn (First Kiss, Zzim, Rub Love), Jong-min Kim (Master Key, A Hyung I Know, Let’s Eat Dinner Together), Kwang-soo Lee (who starred in popular variety show Running Man, and also Huwarang and Entourage), Se-hun Oh (from the boy band EXO, starring various reality shows centering on them such as EXO Next Door), Min Young-Park (Sungkyunkwan Scandal, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim?), Se-Jeong Kim (Master Key), and of course, eminent entertainer and comedian Jae-Suk Yoo who also starred in Running Man and also appeared in Psy’s Gangnam Style music video.
The main overlord, K, is played by Nae-sang Ahn, known for Sungkyukwan Scandal with Min Young-Park and R-Point. Depending on what the plot will be, all of them, including K, will return with the actors recast in the respective roles.
All the original cast members returned for the second season, apart from Lee Kwang-soo who would not be joining due to scheduling conflicts.
Busted Plot: What is it about?
The show follows a group of accidental bumbling detectives who were originally celebrity sleuths. They learn that they are a part of an operation called Project D, in which they are implanted with a chip containing the DNA of famous detectives throughout history. Led by a man only known as “K”, they are recruited as private detectives. Each episode, they are assigned a new case to figure out what is the mystery of the project D is.
Season 1 ends with the detectives receiving a message from K that was written three months ago, during the planning of the murder game party. K’s message is about a final test for them is waiting at a safe house in Incheon. However, they also receive a shocking message from a recognizable voice that K has been kidnapped.
Season 2 is continues following the detectives and their hunt to find out what project D is all about. The season ends with detectives, on Flower Killer’s trail, finding a maze of clues from his home to his secret lair, where they learn a shocking truth.
Busted Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
Busted season 2 released on November 8, 2019 on Netflix. Just like the first season, Season 2, too, consisted of a total of 10 episodes.
It is clear in the way the second season ends that there’s a lot left to the story. So, if the show continues to perform well, one can easily see Netflix renewing the show for another season. There’s a vast audience for K-dramas, not just in the East but also in the US. A platform like Netflix not only increases the reach, but also elevates the status of K-dramas as something to be taken seriously. If renewed, you can expect Busted season 3 to release sometime in November, 2020.
