At times, we long for a light-hearted crime show that doesn’t come with the stress, brain-pounding, and bloodbaths like most of those gritty, headache-inducing series on CBS. Well, introducing a whiff of freshness to this conventional genre is Bravo’s Canadian drama, ‘Carter’, which promises a good dose of squeaky-clean fun.
‘Carter’ revolves around Harley Carter, a star of a hit American detective TV show, who is a native of Canada. After a certain goof-up on the Red Carpet, Harley returns to his hometown to contemplate his actions. However, things take a strange turn when his friends and neighbors can’t seem to separate his real-life and on-screen personas and keep on nagging him to solve actual cases.
Created by Garry Campbell, season 1 of this show premiered on May 15, 2018, on CTV’s sister channel, Bravo, in Canada. It was picked up by WGN America for the United States and the series debuted here in August 2018. Soon after, it was renewed for a season 2, which premiered in October 2019 in Canada. It then made its entry to US screens in January 2020. Read on to know everything about Carter season 3 release date, cast, and plot details.
Carter Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Carter’ season 2 premiered on January 20, 2020, in the US, on WGN America. After airing for 10 episodes, it ended on March 23, 2020. Originally, season 2 had premiered on October 25, 2019, on CTV’s Bravo, in Canada.
Upon its release, Carter was branded as WGN’s most-watched original series in 2018. As for Europe, it aired on AXN, garnering 6.5 million total viewers in 2018. After its debut in Canada, it was also successful in making Bravo the #1 specialty channel in its time-slot in 2018.
Bravo has not officially confirmed if Carter will be renewed for another season. But considering its immensely positive reaction from fans, we are sure that it will soon be recommissioned for a third installment. If renewed, we can expect Carter season 3 to most likely premiere sometime in January 2021.
Carter Season 3 Cast: Who can be in it?’
‘Carter’ stars Jerry O’Connell as the titular protagonist. He is an actor, voice actor, and director, best known for his portrayals of Quinn Mallory in ‘Sliders’, Andrew Clements in ‘My Secret Identity‘, Derek in ‘Scream 2’, and Pete Kaczmarek in the ‘The Defenders‘.
Accompanying him in other prominent roles are Sydney Tamiia Poitier as Sam Shaw (Carter’s childhood buddy and cop), Kristian Bruun as Dave Leigh (owner of a streetwise coffee-truck stop), Brenda Kamino as Dot Yasuda, Varun Saranga as Junior Agent Vijay Gill, and Matt Baram as Evidence Tech Wes Holm.
In season 3, all of the lead cast members are expected to return to reprise their original roles.
Carter Season 3 Plot: What can it be about?
Meet Harley Carter, a resident of Ontario, who became famous in his small town after he helped to capture a serial killer plaguing his neighborhood. Now, after several years, a grown-up Harley is a famed Hollywood actor who portrays the role of a detective in a popular TV show.
But as luck would have it, he has an embarrassing public meltdown on the Red Carpet of an award function, that involves him punching his wife’s lover. So, in order to take a break and rethink his decisions, he returns to his hometown. Here, he meets his childhood bestie Sam (currently a police detective) and former sidekick Dave. He also reunites with his adoptive Japanese American parents, Dot and Koji.
However, Harley soon discovers that he cannot leave behind his on-screen role in solving crimes, as most of the townsfolk cannot seem to tell apart his reel and real life. Hence, he decides to employ his acting experience in tackling true crimes and tags along with Sam, as a consulting detective.
Just like season 1, season 2 also builds on the same premise. Harley is now a celebrity personal investigator and continues leading a famed life, imitating his TV antics. He also becomes entangled in a love triangle with Sam and Joyce Warwick Boyle, her new boss.
Although the stern Boyle is not quite appreciative of his actions, Dave and Harley soon discover that the former hides a dark, mysterious past. Along the way, our protagonist also ponders that sometimes, the toughest cases are the ones that involve personal emotions.
‘Carter’, set against the woodsy backdrops of Canada, is a simple, lighthearted drama, which deserves appreciation primarily because of O’Connell’s polished charisma and comic skills. We meet a man with a good heart, trying to reconnect with his childhood mates. The plots are light and involve low stakes, employing Hollywood-style mystery-solving techniques to tackle the crimes.
Moreover, the relationship dynamics in the series is another reason that makes it such a heartfelt watch. For example, we witness a still-resentful Dave, who tries to stick with his buddies even after being ignored when they moved on to lead more successful lives. ‘Carter‘ also features a diverse cast, with four of the major characters being played by people of color.
If renewed for a third season, we expect ‘Carter’ to stick to its premise of entwining the elements of procedural drama with witty comedy. We hope that it will continue to serve as the more balanced counterpart to the darker, serialized titles we generally see in the crime genre, thereby continuing to be a fan-favorite, refreshing, and relaxing watch.
