You don’t have to be a TV buff to have heard of Big Brother, the reality game show, possibly one of the most popular franchises in the television industry today, and arguably the one to have catapulted unscripted reality TV to worldwide recognition. The concept, having sprung up in the Netherlands by producer John de Mol back in 1997, has since been adapted by over 54 franchise countries and regions around the world including Spain, the U.K, the U.S and India. The Spanish adaptation leads the race in the longest-running adaptation of the series, closely followed by the U.S adaptation that has aired 20 seasons and 706 episodes so far.
Big Brother is titled after a character in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell and the format of the series is competition-based wherein contestants from different walks of life are shut together in a custom-built facility (a set designed specifically for the show in 2005) and monitored around the clock using surveillance cameras as they compete in weekly contests for a grand prize of $500,000. These contestants, otherwise known as HouseGuests, are made to shun communication from the rest of the world during their period of stay.
Celebrity Big Brother is one of the two spin-offs of Big Brother that debuted in February 2018 on CBS. The All-Star edition was a concept speculated since 2002, but it wasn’t until September 7, 2017, that it was confirmed through Julie Chen that the American version of Celebrity Big Brother would indeed happen. Barring a few changes in the format and the broadcast (discussed in detail in the following sections), the game show’s true essence is kept alive. Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan serve as its executive producers. The show has had two successful seasons till now. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming season.
Celebrity Big Brother Cast: Who’s in it?
Julie Chen, the evergreen face of the show since it began back in July 2000, returns as the host of Celebrity Big Brother. This is the longest for any host to have been associated with Big Brother in any country. Season 1 features eleven HouseGuests and season 2 comprises of twelve including Tom Green, Tamar Braxton, Ryan Lochte, Ricky Williams, Natalie Eva Marie, Lolo Jones, Kato Kaelin, Kandi Burruss, Jonathan Bennett, Joey Lawrence, Dina Lohan, and Anthony Scaramucci. Season 3 would see a new list of celebrity contestants, the details of which will be made available as the third season is announced.
Celebrity Big Brother Plot: What’s it about?
The format of Celebrity Big Brother more or less remains similar to its parent show. Head of Household and Power of Veto, the two most lauded elements of the show are retained, and so are live evictions. However, the All-Star format comprising of celebrity contestants is a condensed version that has episodes broadcasted over two weeks as opposed to the three months in a regular season of Big Brother. They are still barred from all modes of communication including phones, Internet, newspaper, etc. and contact with the outside world, but the restriction on alcohol consumption is lifted. The term America’s Favorite HouseGuest is replaced with Favorite Celebrity HouseGuest for the celebrity version. A grand prize of $250,000 awaits the winner of the season.
Celebrity Big Brother Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
Celebrity Big Brother Season 1 premiered on February 7, 2018, on CBS and concluded on February 25, 2018, with Broadway actress, Marissa Jaret Winokur being crowned the winner. Season 2 began airing on January 21, 2019, and wrapped up 26 days later on February 13, 2019. The finale of season 2 saw five finalists, Dina Lohan, Kandi Burruss, Ricky Williams, Lolo Jones, and Tamar Braxton, of whom Braxton was unanimously declared as the winner.
There is still the usual excitement from viewers on the prospect of another season of CBS’s Celebrity Big Brother and the chances of season 3 look more favourable than ever. However, as of now, there is no confirmed news regarding the renewal or cancellation of the show, neither from its producers, the channel or the host Julie Chen. The show is known to run into complications with fitting into CBS’s primetime schedule due to which it took the channel over a decade to make it happen. But they managed somehow.
Julie Chen had said in an interview, “It all depends how well all the shows on the air are doing. But don’t forget, B.B. takes up a lot of real estate on the primetime schedule. We are used to having at least three nights to air in a week. CBS is known for having a strong schedule of shows year round, so it’s hard to say right now what will happen next winter.” In an earlier interview, she had stated, “It’s been explored again as recently as a few years ago, and the economics just didn’t make sense. But we found a way, and now here we are.”
We are sure the same will be the case with the next season of Celebrity Big Brother for which we can expect a release date to be announced with CBS’s Winter 2020 schedule. Season 3 of the show should release in early 2020 like its previous seasons.
