Science fiction shows have always dared to ask the tougher questions about the future of human society, and nowadays, we are seeing a resurgence of the genre as it is evolving to include psychological aspects too instead of merely showing futuristic tech and settings. ‘Colony’ is one such American show that portrays a dystopic scenario and includes elements of drama. It comes from the minds of Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal — the former is best known for making ‘Lost‘.
The show revolves around a family that fights tooth and nail to stay together in a new world order that is established in the wake of a mysterious alien invasion. ‘Colony’ airs on the USA Network and first premiered on January 14, 2016. We are of the opinion that it shows America under occupation, unlike any other series, and manages to capture the elements of dystopia really well. However, before you read on about the show, here is what the critics had to say – ” ‘Colony’ offers an engaging enough narrative, a few scares, and an overall good time, even if none of it is particularly original.”
Colony Cast: Who is in it?
The cast of ‘Colony’ is led by Josh Holloway, who also appears in ‘Yellowstone‘, as Will Bowman. Bowman is an ex-US Army Ranger and an FBI agent, who is working undercover as a truck driver and mechanic. In order to ensure the safety of his family, he is forced to work as an enforcer for the aliens who invade earth. Sarah Wayne Callies, of ‘Prison Break‘ and ‘The Walking Dead‘ fame, plays the role of Katie Bowman, Will’s wife, and a member of a resistance movement against the alien invasion. Alex Neustaedter appears as Bram Bowman, Will and Katie’s teenage son, while Isabella Crovetti is seen as Grace Kathryn “Gracie” Bowman, their young daughter.
There are other important characters like Alan Snyder, played by Peter Jacobson, who is the Proxy Governor of the Los Angeles Bloc and Eric Broussard with extensive military and counterintelligence experience and happen’s to be Katie’s main contact in the resistance movement.
Colony Plot: What is it about?
‘Colony’ takes place in the near future in Los Angeles, where residents are forced to live under a military regime which is imposed by an organization calling itself the Transitional Authority. In this dystopia, the Authority serves an alien group that is simply referred to as Hosts. Not much is known about this extraterrestrial life form, except that they took control on one fine day, which is now called the ‘Arrival’. The collaborating forces who work for the Hosts have a symbol representing them, and these are stylized birds of prey or raptors. Thus, they get the nickname ‘Raps’, and the policy of the Hosts is enforced by the Authority through military police which is actually called Homeland Security but gets nicknamed as ‘Redhats’.
Once the Hosts arrived, they proceeded to make giant rectangular blocks descend from the sky, which was then linked together to form walls that divided the city. In the show, one of these walls, which are 20 to 30 stories tall, besides being many meters thick, and stretching for many miles in length, manages to surround the central portion of Los Angeles. It is indicated that such walls surround neighboring urban areas as well, which are called ‘blocs’ and the whole thing is known as a ‘colony’. While the extent of the invasion is never clearly shown, it is presumed to be worldwide. Once the occupation is complete, gateways are installed, which have heavy security, and traffic is funneled through these. The Authority also maintains strict control over the distribution of consumables, like rationing fuel and food, and the movement of people.
Since the Hosts themselves cannot enforce everything, they take help from the elites among the local population. They are the collaborators, and they help maintain control through a variety of measures including, “separation of loved ones, shoot-on-sight curfews, forced disappearances, random checkpoints, frequent electronic identity checks, limitation of motor vehicle usage (most people walk or ride bicycles), pervasive visual propaganda, slave labor in a place called the “Factory” (later revealed to be located on the Earth’s moon to mine radioactive materials), and electronic surveillance with Host-provided drone aircraft that launch from the wall.” The Hosts also impose medical rules like deeming diabetes unworthy to be treated, thus using it to cull the population.
Naturally, all humans do not take kindly to this interference and there is a resistance movement called the ‘Insurgency’ or the ‘Resistance’. This is where the Bowmans come in, as we see the son separated from his family when the aliens set up the blocs. The father is forced to work for the Redhats, to track down and eliminate Resistance members. He does this to keep his family out of the Factory. However, things get complicated when he finds out that his wife is a Resistance member, and they finally begin to trade information. Meanwhile, Bram discovers a secret way under the wall, and even joins a rival resistance group.
Overall, the series is smartly crafted and shows that even in case of an alien invasion, it is the “fear-stoking foreign agents lurking within humanity—those that pit us, often pathetically and violently, against each other”, that is the most problematic, as The Hollywood Reporter rightly surmises. If the occupation you see in ‘Colony’ seems to remind you of historical events, you would not be far wrong, since the Cuse spoke to Collider saying that the show was “conceived as a metaphor for France during the Nazi occupation”.
