‘Comrade Detective’ is a Romanian-American buddy cop web television series that is available on Amazon Prime Video. Created by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, and directed by Rhys Thomas, the show pays homage to, or rather, is inspired by the great US buddy cop comedy shows of the ’80s like ‘21 Jump Street’. Interestingly, the show’s presentation is a unique one, and episodes are presented in a way as if they belong to a lost, Cold War-era Romanian show that was commissioned by the Communist Party to promote a communist worldview during the Cold War.
A relatively new show, Season 1 of ‘Comrade Detective’, consisting of six episodes, premiered on August 4, 2017, and was widely praised by television critics and audiences alike. Since then, fans of the show, both in Romania and abroad, have been wondering whether it will return for a second season. Here’s everything we know about it thus far.
Comrade Detective Cast: Who is in it?
Interestingly, Season 1 of ‘Comrade Detective’ was filmed entirely in Romania using local actors and actresses, and the show was later dubbed into English for international audiences. Consequently, the show has two sets of cast members – one set for the Romanian edition, and one set for the English dub.
In the English dub of ‘Comrade Detective’, ‘Step Up’ star Channing Tatum voices one of the two main protagonists, Gregor Anghel, while ‘Inception’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ star Joseph Gordon-Levitt voices Gregor’s partner, Iosif Baciu. As far as the voices of recurring characters in the English dub are concerned, Nick Offerman voices Captain Covaci, Jenny Slate voices Jane, Jason Mantzoukas voices Dragos, Chloë Sevigny voices Soniya Baciu, Jake Johnson voices Stan, and John DiMaggio voices Tipsy and other minor characters.
In the original Romanian version of the show, Florin Piersic Jr. and Corneliu Ulici play Gregor Anghel and Iosif Baciu, respectively. Other actors and actresses include Adrian Paduraru as Captain Covaci, Olivia Nita as Jane, Florin Galan as Dragos, Diana Vladu as Sonya Baciu, Ion Grosu as Stan, and Tipsy Angelo as Tipsy.
Comrade Detective Plot: What is it about?
As far as the presentation of ‘Comrade Detective’ is concerned, the show is designed to resemble a gritty Romanian buddy cop show from the 1980s that was designed to promote a communist worldview during the Cold War as opposed to Western capitalism and imperialism. To give it an authentic feel, Channing Tatum and Jon Ronson also present the show as themselves.
When it comes to the plot, ‘Comrade Detective’ is rather generic and follows hard-boiled detective Gregor Anghel and his partner Iosif Baciu as they try to solve an intriguing, yet life-threatening case. When Gregor and his partner carry out a drug bust against the police captain’s orders, Gregor witnesses his partner being murdered by a man in a Ronald Reagan mask. Desperate for revenge, Gregor then teams up with Iosif, his new partner, to track down the killer and avenge his former partner’s death. However, when Gregor and Iosif dive head-first into the case, they discover a Western conspiracy that aims to indoctrinate Romanians with Western capitalism and religion.
Unsurprisingly, the show’s unique premise and satirization of the battle of ideologies during the Cold War era has earned it tonnes of fans. Describing the show, Vanity Fair wrote, “The series effectively satirizes both communism and capitalism while maintaining expertly stylized cinematography, replicating a time when propaganda was overt and clear. Now, of course, such machinery has grown more sophisticated; the show’s creators note that propaganda has become more obscured, subliminal, and subtle.” In a similar vein, Variety praised the show’s approach, writing, “It’s a journey through layers of irony; occasionally, Tatum and author Jon Ronson introduce the episodes with put-on seriousness, for even more ironic emphasis. All together it makes for a thought experiment more than a story, with occasional flashes of brilliance that may or may not be purely unintentional.”
It is thus not surprising that ‘Comrade Detective’ enjoys considerable clout among television critics, and it boasts a solid score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics consensus reading, “‘Comrade Detective’ mixes history and humor to create a bizarre hybrid of familiar detective tropes and foreign propaganda techniques that hits more often than it misses.” On IMDb, the show enjoys a good rating of 7.3/10.
Comrade Detective Season 2 Release Date: When is it coming out?
‘Comrade Detective’ Season 1 premiered on August 4, 2017, but since then, there has been no news on the show’s renewal. However, each episode of the show ended with “To be continued…” in characteristic ‘80s style, and many have taken this to be an indication that a second season might be coming, sooner rather than later.
When asked about the possibilities for the storyline of Season 2, creator Bryan Gatewood and director Rhys Thomas had excitedly revealed their willingness and eagerness to oversee a second season, and had the following to say about it: “If they let us do it, we will absolutely be doing it and following Gregor and Iosif on another mission. There are so many avenues we feel confident we can go down with these guys, and I think we’re all eager to keep living in this universe. So we’re thinking about it. We just need everyone to hopefully enjoy it.”
That being said, our best guess is that if the show does get renewed, ‘Comrade Detective’ Season 2 can release sometime in 2020. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
