The Darkest Minds 2: Everything We Know

‘The Darkest Minds’ is an American dystopian science fiction thriller that has been helmed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. The story is based on Alexandra Bracken’s young adult novel of the same name. The basic plot follows a group of teenagers who are on the run from the government, having mysteriously received superpowers. Although the movie was not too well-received critically, it did manage to make a profit, bringing in $41.1 million worldwide, against a budget of around $30 million. Besides, fans of the books have loved it, and are craving for more.

It is entirely possible for ‘The Darkest Minds’ to get a sequel since there is more of the source material to work with. Bracken’s series has more books apart from ‘The Darkest Minds’, including ‘Never Fade’ and ‘In the Afterlight’. The author also has three more novellas, which shed light on the series, that can be found in ‘Through the Dark’. Besides, with the popularity of young adult science fiction, and the director herself hinting at her desire to return to the characters, we can in all probability expect a sequel to ‘The Darkest Minds’, somewhere down the road.

The Darkest Minds 2 Plot: What Can It be About?

Naturally, you must be wondering what ‘The Darkest Minds’ sequel could be about. As far as Jennifer Yuh Nelson is concerned, she has made it known that no punches have been pulled for the first movie, and she has delivered the best film possible. Thus, it is unlikely that ‘The Darkest Minds’ sequel will deal with any more of the source material from the first book. In fact, it is likely that the story will be based on the source material of ‘Never Fade’, the second novel in the series.

While we proceed to acquaint you with the story of ‘Never Fade’, you should keep in mind that Bracken herself has said that once her book gets made into a film, different people weigh in, giving their opinions. This leads to a lot of embellishments and streamlining. Thus, in the eventuality that ‘Never Fade’ is made into the sequel movie, the plot details could be slightly different from what we are outlining below. However, we will see Ruby, our orange-eyed  mind-controlling teen, return to the story.

Although she never asked for the abilities that have almost cost her dearly, she has now come to depend on them, using them on missions to take down the corrupt government (that hunts down orange-eyed and red-eyed superpowered kids) and breaking into her enemies’ minds. Despite being considered as a leader by the other kids in the Children’s League, Ruby believes that she is a monster. Soon enough, she is entrusted with a dangerous secret that forces her to go on a deadly mission, leaving behind the Children’s League.

There appears to be crucial information about the disease that wiped out most of America’s children, and gave the rest superpowers, in the first place. Though the information seems to have survived every attempt to destroy it, it exists in a flash drive that lies in the hands of Liam Stewart, Ruby’s crush from the first film. Though Ruby believed him to be her future, Liam would not recognize Ruby in her current state. However, she sets out across the lawless lands, hoping to find him. In order to get to the truth about the catastrophe that upturned Ruby’s entire life, and the whole of America, she has to choose between her old friends and the promise that she made to the League. Ruby is willing to do anything to protect the people that she loves, but there is a chance that winning the war could mean losing herself.

In case you are wondering whether Chubs, the much needed comedic relief in the intense tale, will return, we have answers for that too. Although Chubs was apparently shot at the end of ‘The Dark Minds’, the movie does not show him die. Moreover, in ‘Never Fade’, Chubs plays an important role in driving the plot forward, thus the sequel will probably start with showing how Chubs gets saved, before moving on to the intrigue-packed plot.

The Darkest Minds 2 Cast: Who Can Be In It?

In the eventuality that there is a sequel to ‘The Darkest Minds’, it is rather simple to know who are the cast members most likely to return and be in the movie. The characters from the ‘The Darkest Minds’ who also appear in the sequel are Ruby Daly, Liam Stewart, Clancy Gray, and Chubs.

Thus we are likely to see Amandla Stenberg, Harris Dickinson, Patrick Gibson, and Skylan Brooks reprising their roles. Naturally, there are several new characters who are going to be introduced in the sequel, and the cast will increase as new actors come on to play these roles.

The Darkest Minds 2 Crew: Who Can Be Behind It?

‘The Darkest Minds’ has been helmed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who has already made it clear that she would jump at the chance to make another movie. She expressed how she loved the characters, and how much the actors got out of being with each other on set. The director stated that since they were good friends, she could not wait to get back together. Thus, in the event of a sequel, Yuh Nelson will definitely be on board. Chad Hodge might be returning as the scriptwriter as well, but beyond that, we cannot be sure at this point.

The Darkest Minds 2 Release Date: When Can It Premiere?

‘The Darkest Minds’ was released on August 3, 2018. However, 20th Century Fox bought the film rights back in 2014. The entire project took four years to come together. Since the rights to ‘Never Fade’ have not been acquired yet, the earliest we can expect a sequel to ‘The Darkest Minds’ is in 2022, or 2023. Naturally, once the project is underway, casting should not take as long as the first time, since some of the cast members are expected to return in the sequel.
