Will There be a Dirty John Season 3?

Dirty John Season 3

Upon its premiere in 2018, ‘Dirty John’ became the highest-rated scripted series on Bravo because of its gripping premise, based on Christopher Goffard’s eponymous hit podcast that discusses the life and death of John Meehan. Season 2 follows the acrimonious divorce battle between Betty and Dan Broderick. Both the seasons of the anthology series have received mixed to positive reviews from the critics and audiences.

However, it has amassed a loyal fanbase for its smooth editing, powerful performances, and a narrative that is soaked in true-crime. Now the question arises, will there be a ‘Dirty John’ season 3? If yes, when will it release? Well, we are here to help you with that.

Dirty John Season 3 Release Date

‘Dirty John’ season 2 premiered on June 2, 2020, on USA Network, and concluded its run on July 14, 2020, after airing eight hour-long episodes. The first season released on Bravo, but the makers moved its base to USA Network for the second season to attract more viewers.

As far as another season is concerned, here’s what we know. The network hasn’t announced the renewal or cancellation of the series yet. However, season 2 received a favorable response from the viewers because of the chilling execution of Dan and Betty’s tragic divorce and custody battle. Not just that, the critics as well fans praised the electrifying performances of the protagonists – Amanda Peet and Christian Slater.

Also, the show follows the popular anthology format by featuring one closed-ended story per season, just like Ryan Murphy’s hit creation, ‘American Horror Story.’ The flexible factor makes room for the creator to span multiple seasons. Plus, there is no denying the fact that true-crime is one of the most popular genres and holds a higher appeal among fans. Considering the above-mentioned points, it is highly likely that the show will be recommissioned for a third season. If renewed, we can expect ‘Dirty John’ season 3 to release sometime in March 2022.

Dirty John Season 3 Cast: Who is in it?

Each season of ‘Dirty John’ is a self-contained story that revolves around a particular bunch of characters. In season 1, we meet Connie Britton as Debra Newell and Eric Bana as John Meehan, as they execute the story of the late swindler, John Michael Meehan. Season 2 features Amanda Peet as Betty Broderick, Christian Slater as Dan Broderick, and Rachel Keller as Linda Kolkena in the lead roles.

The cast also includes Lily Donoghue, Missi Pyle, Emily Bergl, Holley Fain, Lena Georgas, Tiera Skovbyeas, and Chris Mason in recurring roles. Since it is an anthology series, we expect season 3 to feature a different cast altogether.

Dirty John Season 3 Plot: What can it be About?

‘Dirty John’ is a true-crime anthology series that deals with different stories each season. Season 1 revolves around con-artist John Meehan who exploits the trust of his successful businesswoman wife, Debra Newell. As his mysterious past begins to unfold in front of Debra’s daughters, they map out a plan to expose him but it results in a tragedy, with John being killed.

The second season puts the spotlight on Dan and Betty Broderick’s legal divorce battle, which is often touted as one of “America’s messiest divorces.” In the season, we see that after years of manipulation, Dan admits to his wife of many years, Betty, that he has been cheating on her with his young secretary, Linda. He goes on to marry Linda and constantly harasses Betty by not allowing her to see her kids and also cutting huge chunks from her monthly allowances. Betty goes off the edge after constant gaslighting, and shoots both Dan and Linda, at their property.

If renewed, the third season might also follow a case that has been ripped from the headlines. If we look at the pattern of the previous two seasons, it is evident that showrunner Alexandra Cunningham chooses stories that encircles broken relationships and “Love gone wrong.” So there is a high probability that the plot of the third season will center upon a dysfunctional relationship that culminates into tragedy.
