Donald Jay Rickles was an American stand-up comedian and actor. He was born in Queens New York in on May 8, 1926, and became famous for his insult comedy.  He used to perform various comedy shows and his different style of comedy earned him the nickname of “The Merchant of Venom” and “Mr. Warmth”. Donald Rickles is an alumnus at the Newtown High School, where he graduated from and later enlisted with the United States Navy to be of service during World War II. He was positioned on the motor torpedo boat tender USS Cyrene(AGP-13) where he served as a seaman first class.

Two years after he was honorably discharged in 1946, he decided to be a dramatic actor and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts for his studies. He earned bits on television, nothing major which frustrated him and he turned to comedy in clubs in New York, Miami, and Los Angeles to perform as a comedian. As an insult comedian, he sent his audience into fits of laughter who praised his insults more than they applauded the material he had prepared.

Don made his film debut with the movie titled “Run Silent, Run Deep” in 1958. Through the next decade, he made several television appearances. He also featured in the film series “Beach Party”. Eventually, he became a regular on various talk shows, mainly The Dean Martin Show and also The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast. His other appearances include The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Munsters, The Addams Family, Get Smart, and The Twilight Zone are just to name a few.

Starting from the early 1980s, Rickles began working with Steve Lawrence in Las Vegas. Donald also appeared in the movie “Innocent Blood”. His other ventures in television include Tales from the Crypt, Daddy Dearest, casino, and he also voiced the character of Mr. Potato Head in the movies Toy Story and Toy Story 2. There are also numerous projects that have been made regarding Rickles, which include a memoir called “Rickles’ Book”, which came out in 2007. Also, in the same year a documentary was made on him called “Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project” and was debuted on HBO.

Rickles also won a Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program”. In 2014 he was honored by “One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute to Don Rickles” of Spike TV. Till 2015 he was still appearing on numerous talk shows which include The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live among others. Don Rickles died on April 6, 2017, due to kidney failure at the age of 90.
