Peacock’s true-crime series ‘Dr. Death’ follows the sinister story of a surgeon who abandons his Hippocratic Oath and, much to the horror of his colleagues, brutally maims his patients as they lie helpless on the operating table before him. The show also examines the complexities of bringing a practicing doctor to justice and the tragic repercussions of an unwittingly failed system of checks and balances that allowed someone like Christopher Duntsch to perform multiple surgeries.
‘Dr. Death’ has received widespread appreciation for its gripping story as well as a stellar cast that includes the likes of Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater. A binge-watcher’s delight, if you can’t wait for the next season of the show, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s what we know about ‘Dr. Death’ season 2.
Dr. Death Season 2 Release Date
‘Dr. Death’ season 1 premiered on July 15. 2021 on NBCUniversal’s over-the-top streaming service Peacock. All episodes released simultaneously and in total season 1 has 8 episodes of approximately 50 minutes each.
As far as season 2 is concerned, there has been no official announcement about it being greenlit. However, the podcast of that same name that the show is based on does, in fact, have a second season. This could point to season 2 of the show also eventually being made. Another podcast created by the podcast network Wondery— ‘Dirty John‘ has been made into a series of the same name and has so far spawned two seasons. Considering the ‘Dr. Death’ podcast is also a Wondery production, chances for a follow-up season of the ‘Dr. Death’ series seem high.
Of course, there are other factors at play that will be considered before season 2 is greenlit. Viewership numbers play an especially important role for obvious reasons and a follow-up season will likely be contingent on how well season 1 does in terms of garnering an audience. Here too, the fact that the show is based on a hit podcast will work in its favor as the story already has an established fan base.
Lastly, the making of season 1 involved copious amounts of research including thousands of pages of documents and many hours of interview footage. Production was further hindered when the Covid 19 pandemic resulted in huge delays as well as the show’s lead cast member being changed from Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) to Joshua Jackson due to scheduling conflicts. A tumultuous production run on the previous season will most likely factor into the decision to make season 2.
Showrunner and co-writer of the show Patrick Macmanus heard the first 3 episodes of the ‘Dr. Death’ podcast before it aired in 2018. Season 1 of the show which is based on it came out in 2021, almost 3 years later, telling us that there is possibly a significant gap between the podcast and the show’s release. Season 2 of the podcast came out in 2020. If we follow a similar timescale and account for a possibly smoother production run for season 2 (since Covid 19 protocols for filming have since become more common), we could be looking at the potential ‘Dr. Death’ season 2 sometime in late 2022 or early 2023.
Dr. Death Season 2 Cast: Who can be in it?
The cast of ‘Dr. Death’ season 1 is led by Joshua Jackson who essays the sinister Christopher Duntsch. We also see Christian Slater as Dr. Randall Kirby, Alec Baldwin as Dr. Robert Henderson, Dominic Burgess as Jerry Summers, Grace Gummer as Kim Morgan, Fredric Lehne as Christopher’s father Don Duntsch, and AnnaSophia Robb as the motivated assistant district attorney Michelle Stughart. The supporting cast of the show includes Grainger Hines as Earl Burke, Hubert Point-Du Jour as Josh Baker, Dashiell Eaves as Stan Novak, and Molly Griggs as Wendy Young, amongst others.
Considering the story of Christopher Duntsch is essentially over, we can expect an entirely different cast in the potential season 2 of the show. There is a chance that the cast will be headlined by Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater (who also appears on ‘Dirty John’) again, but that, for now, is mainly speculative.
Dr. Death Season 2 Plot: What can it be About?
Season 1 closes with the sinister Dr. Duntsch finally being brought to justice after maiming over 30 patients and being potentially responsible for the death of 2 of them. He is given life in prison, with the earliest possibility of parole in 2045. The first season was based on season 1 of the podcast ‘Dr. Death.’
Season 2 of the podcast follows the story of Dr. Farid Fata, a former hematologist and oncologist who admitted to planning one of the biggest frauds in American health care. Known to prescribe chemotherapy to patients who didn’t require it, some of whom didn’t even have cancer, the story is an equally gruesome dive into one of the most chilling medical crimes to have been made public. Hence, it is quite likely that the potential season 2 of the Peacock show ‘Dr. Death’ will follow the story of Dr. Fata and his crimes.
