Emmy Rossum is an actress, director as well as a singer-songwriter. She was named Emmanuelle Grey “Emmy” Rossum by her parents. She was born on September 12, 1986, in New York City. She identifies herself as Jewish and was brought up by her Jewish mother who separated from Rossum’s father when she was pregnant with Rossum. She was interested in singing from a young age and joined the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus when she was seven years old. She was eligible to join the choir after she managed to sing “Happy Birthday” in all 12 keys. She continued with her schooling by taking online-extension courses offered by Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY) and was awarded a high school diploma when she was 15 years old. She studied art history, philosophy and French at Columbia University.
Rossum made her television debut in the daytime soap opera “As the World Turns” in August 1997 and followed it up with “Snoops” where she had a guest role. She was also a part of “Genius” a made-for-TV movie for which she was nominated for a Young Artist Award in 199 for Best Performance in a TV Movie. In 2000, she portrayed a young Audrey Hepburn in “The Audrey Hepburn Story”.
Rossum’s film debut was at the age of 13 when she played the role of an Appalachian orphan in “Songcatcher”. She sang a duet with Dolly Parton for the Songcatcher soundtrack. Her performance in the movie was lauded and earned her a nomination for Best Debut Performance by Independent Spirit Award.
She was also named “One of the Ten to Watch” by Variety magazine in 2000. The film won the Special Jury Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance at the Sundance Film Festival. She has also appeared in “Nola” (2003), “Mystic River” (2003), “The day after Tomorrow” (2004), ‘Poseidon” (2006), “Dragonball Evolution” (2009), “Dare” (2009), “Comet” (2013), “Before I Disappear” (2014) and “Curfew” (2012) amongst others. She has appeared in the lead role in the hit dramedy series “Shameless” since 2009.
Rossum’s interest in music led her to release her debut album “Inside Outside” in 2007 and it reached number 199 in the Billboard charts. Her next album “Sentimental Journey” was released by Warner Bros. Records in 2013. It reached number 92 in the Billboard charts. Her love for music has made her continue to take music lessons from soprano Joann C. Zajac at ZajacStudio.
