‘Family By The Ton’ is a spin-off of TLC’s weight loss show, ‘My 600-lb Life’, and follows the excruciating and challenging process of weight loss by the Anderson sisters, Naomi and Drew Stewart, and their cousin Chitoka Light. The three sisters suffer from morbid obesity as a result of hereditary factors, and have damaging food addictions that put them under severe risk of many fatal diseases.
The reality show follows the trio as they take the help of Dr. Charles Procter Jr to try and get rid of debilitating conditions. In the show, Dr. Charles gives the three sisters professional guidance in their weight loss regimes, that has a combination of diet restrictions, workouts, and bariatric surgeries. The Anderson sisters’ journey from fat to fit, replete with its many challenges, constitute the primary plot of the show, which is aired by TLC.
The first season of the show, consisting of six episodes, was released on January 10, 2018, on TLC. A few months later, TLC, on May 3, 2018, renewed the show for a second season, which hit viewers’ screens on December 21, 2018, and carried with it a twist very few viewers expected. Now, fans are wondering whether the inspirational show will be renewed for a third season.
Family By The Ton Cast: Who’s in it?
Season 1 of the show primarily revolved around obese trio – Naomi Anderson, Drew Stewart, and Chikota Light – and Dr. Charles Procter Jr, their mentor in their weight loss journey.
Season 2, however, surprised viewers. While most fans of the show had expected the Anderson family to make a return in Season 2, they were taken aback when Season 2 started following the weight loss story of another set of cousins from the King family – Casey, Ed, Amy, and Amanda. When Season 2 started airing, fans were left shocked and disappointed when the Anderson family did not make a return. However, TLC had another trick up its sleeve – after airing six episodes on the King family, the Anderson family was re-introduced, and the show started focusing on how things had gone for the sisters since the events of Season 1. Dr. Procter, in Season 2, was seen guiding both the Andersons and the Kings.
Given the surprise change of cast members in Season 2, TLC has made it very difficult for us to predict what could go down if a third season is approved. On one hand, the show could follow the journey of the Kings and the Andersons. On the other hand, TLC could introduce a new family, and pick up on the stories of the Kings and the Andersons later in the season. Either way, it’s a difficult prediction to make.
Family By The Ton Plot: What is it about?
While the six-episode Season 1 focused on the challenges faced by the Anderson sisters in their fight to return to fitness and do away with their unhealthy lifestyles, Season 2 began with a fresh focus on the newly-introduced King family.
At the beginning of Season 2, we saw the King family members – Casey, Ed, Amy, and Amanda – come to terms with their obesity and unhealthy lifestyles after Amanda decides to undergo bariatric surgery. As Amanda undergoes bariatric surgery to help with her fight against cancer, we see Casey confronted with the bitter truth that he will die if he doesn’t lose weight soon. The King family’s struggle to lose weight and bring back some normalcy in their lives sees their familial relationships strained.
As the season progresses, Casey has a confrontation with his parents about his weight, while post-surgery pains see Amanda land up in ER. Amy, meanwhile, undertakes a major lifestyle change in the hopes of becoming eligible for bariatric surgery herself.
Amy’s surgery doesn’t help with familial tensions either – while Ed follows suit and gears up for surgery himself, Casey starts questioning the effectiveness of surgery after seeing Amanda and Amy go through post-operative care. However, he later changes his mind and applies for surgery. As Casey awaits news about whether he has been approved for surgery, we see more drama as Amanda gets news about her cancer, and the recovering Amy prepares to undertake a hellish Spartan race (we won’t give any more spoilers).
With things heating up with the King Family, the show the re-introduces the Anderson sisters, and presents viewers with their journey a year after they started out. In Season 2, we find that the Anderson sisters are struggling with weight loss after their initial success. To complicate matters further, we also find that another cousin of the Andersons, the 600-lb Shavonne, also wants to lose weight. What follows is more drama as the trio tries to motivate Shavonne, and issues erupt between the cousin sisters as all four struggle to lose weight and become fit.
Season 2 saw both the Kings and the Andersons face plenty of drama and numerous challenges, and chances are that both families could return for Season 3, if TLC renews the show again. We will update this section when we get some news about what Season 3 might involve.
It’s understandable that the inspirational weight loss show caters to a niche audience, and in terms of reception, ‘Family By The Ton’ has a mediocre rating of 6.8/10 on IMDb.
Family By The Ton Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
Season 2 of the show premiered on December 21, 2018. As far as the next season goes, we don’t have an official announcement yet. Though considering the popularity of the show, we would be surprised if it doesn’t get renewed. Our best guess is that if the show does get renewed, Season 2 of Family by the Ton can release sometime in December 2019. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
