It’s one thing to sing and it’s an entirely different one to act, that too on a commercial level. There have been so many cases that famous musicians thought they would rub off of their musical career and try out their chances with the acting game. However, the limelight isn’t always so kind, neither are the critics or for that matter the viewers. Here is the list of 10 famous musicians who tried career in acting (and failed).
With 11 #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, Rihanna has proved her mettle with singing, the Bajan superstar added: “Actress” to her resume, debuting in the science-fiction thriller “Battleship” which turned out to be a massive flop at the box-office with disappointment from the #RihannaNavy. But she’s not the first singer to come out to test herself onscreen and failed at a grand level.
9. Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey, or more popularly known as MC had her try at the theatres with ‘Glitter’, that was not at all appealing as all of her fans had been hoping for, seeing their icon onscreen. But that didn’t stop her as she came out as Ms. Weiss in ‘Precious’, which was again not a hit, proving “Not all that Glitters is gold”.
8. Vanilla Ice
Rising to the predominantly black music with his hit song “Ice, Ice Baby”, Vanilla Ice was super famous in the early 90s. To capitalize on his popularity, he made the leap to being a lead actor in the film ‘Cool as Ice’, playing the role of a rapper who falls for a student in a small town, but the movie didn’t take off, neither did his rapping career later that decade.
Beyonce definitely had all the chops needed to become an actress, and fairly was given sufficient chances with Austin Powers, ‘The Fighting Temptations’, ‘Dreamgirls’, heck she even did a thriller ‘Obsessed’, playing the role of a distressed woman but didn’t quite made it into the skin of the character which led to others believing that she couldn’t get the acting done right.
6. Britney Spears
The oh-so-popular Brits could get a total of ONE chance at getting the acting done correctly, ‘Crossroads’ it was. And man it was bad. I mean, there has to be a reason why such a big superstar stopped after one movie-role. Clearly, she realized or maybe someone else did that she’s terrible at acting.
5. Michael Jackson
MJ took the liberty to play the role of himself in ‘Moonwalker’ and thought that’d be really easy, right? Wrong. It turned out that yes, he did actually portray himself, but it almost seemed like it was a lookalike. Michael Jackson had that music video for his commercially successful song ‘Thriller’ that he was alright in, and thought he’d pull off the role of an actor, but the movie didn’t come off as he had expected.
4. Jessica Simpson
Coming on to stardom in the late nineties, Simpson started off in a reality show ‘Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica’, during which someone actually thought she could act about right which landed her a role in feature film ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’. Jessica tried her best to get into the character but she couldn’t quite manage it, making that movie her most famous one, of course for all the wrong reasons. She appeared again in ‘Employee of the Month’ but later stopped acting altogether, saving us all.
3. 50 Cent
Following the success of 8 Mile starring Eminem, many thought rappers could actually get their acting game on point and project 50 as the lead in the 2005 biopic ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’, loosely based on 50 Cent’s interesting life-story, drawing parallels with Eminem’s. But it didn’t work out so much. In fact, Samuel L Jackson turned down his role in this movie to avoid working with an inexperienced actor. 50 had many gigs but all the films failed on the commercial level just as much on the critical level.
Prince starred in the 1984’s ‘Purple Rain’ that failed miserably at the box-office, although it has a great music. It was the sixth best-selling soundtrack of all time. He played the role of a character The Kid, who loosely resembles himself who’s trying to get off of his horrible life through music. He is the front-man of the band called The Revolution. Prince’s acting was very bad and that’s the reason he couldn’t get his acting career take off.
There’s a reason Madonna is famous, and that’s singing. She’s brilliant at it, but again that doesn’t make sure that she can get the acting game right too. We mean, she tried, yes, with movies like 2002’s ‘Swept Away’ which displayed her pathetic acting skills. The movie was the remake of the original one that came out way back in 74 and it was argued that it was Madonna’s acting that made the movie so bad. Hopefully, she wouldn’t bless us again with that action of hers, and stick with what she’s best at. Singing.
