Fantasy Island Episode 1 Recap

In the first episode, titled ‘Hungry Christine/Mel Loves Ruby,’ we see two compelling stories about two women from different walks of life seeking comfort on Fantasy Island. The first one is Christine Collins, an anchorwoman who has been struggling with her weight. Her only goal is to feature in one of the major channels as a reporter, but her age limits her options, and even getting Botox doesn’t help. One day, Christine goes off on an explosive rant that is captured and released on the internet.

Ever since her rant, Christine has wanted to escape, and Fantasy Island gives her the perfect opportunity to do so. This recreational island is run by Elena Roarke, who took over the duties after her great uncle’s passing. Upon reaching, Christine’s first demand is to be allowed to eat with her heart’s content without gaining a single pound. Joining her is an old couple – Mel and Ruby Akuda – who is devastated after learning Ruby has cancer. The island works its magic on the pair as they relive their youthful days swimming in the therapeutic waters of the place.

Christine, on the other hand, eats endlessly. She chances upon one of the best sushi she has ever tried, but she still has unresolved emotions regarding her stepfather Landon, who is the source of all her insecurities. After her mother died, Christine found a way to escape his presence physically, but appalling memories of him still haunt her mind. It is also revealed that Ruby is bisexual, which still disturbs Mel despite the fact that she chose to be with him years ago. Ruby’s battle is, however, with her disease and not her sexual orientation.

Therefore, the only way Ruby could extricate herself from her misery is by taking her own life. Yet, Elena and Mel convince her to take a step back and reevaluate her life. In the end, she decides to stay back on the island at Elena’s request while Mel goes home where his children would be told that their mother has passed. Christine is lastly fed roasted pork shaped like her stepfather that helps her move on.
