Will There be a Fear City: New York vs The Mafia Season 2?

Fear City: New York vs The Mafia

Netflix is a gift that keeps on giving, even in the middle of a pandemic! In July 2020, Netflix dropped ‘Fear City: New York vs The Mafia’ from its vault full of content, to satiate the appetite of the true-crime fans. The crime documentary series showcases the rise and fall of five most notorious mob families, who infused fear in the air of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s.

The series opened to a favorable response from the critics as well as the audiences, especially among the fans of mobster programming, who lauded the show’s inclusion of unseen archival material and detailed interviews of the authorities involved in the case. Naturally, the question arises: Will there be a ‘Fear City: New York vs The Mafia’ season 2? Here’s everything we know!

Fear City: New York vs The Mafia Season 2 Release Date

‘Fear City: New York vs The Mafia’ season 1 premiered on July 22, 2020, on Netflix. It consists of three episodes with a runtime of 40-65 minutes each. All three episodes dropped on the same day!

Now, you must be wondering whether the show will return for another reason or not. First things first, the show was dubbed as a miniseries, indicating that the makers didn’t conceive the show with multiple seasons in mind. Moreover, the series ends on a comprehensive note, as the director Sam Hobkinson covers all the aspects of The Mafia Commission Trial, leaving a narrow scope for a potential second season. Therefore, it is unlikely that ‘Fear City: New York vs The Mafia’ season 2 will ever get made.

Fear City: New York vs The Mafia Season 2 Cast: Who is in it?

Since it is a documentary series, all the cast members appear as their real selves. To showcase the life and crimes of the mobsters of the five organized crime families, including the bosses Anthony Salerno, Anthony Corallo, and Carmine Persico, the show mostly relies on archival audio tapes and video footage of the criminals.

It also features detailed interviews of the federal authorities, agents, and attorneys who worked on the case, back in the day. A few people who are closely linked to the trial face the camera to offer some insight into the case. Among those names are two mob figures – Johnny Alite and Michael Franzese, who spill some unheard facts and secrets.

What is Fear City: New York vs The Mafia About?

The true-crime series documents the dismantling of The Commission, a ruling body comprising the New York Five Families bosses, as they are convicted and thrown in prison for charges ranging from murder to extortion, labor racketeering, etc. It features FBI agents and attorneys like Michael Chertoff, John Savarese, and Gil Childers who discuss how they managed to pull off the Mafia Commission Trial, often touted as “the most significant assault on the infrastructure of organized crime since 1943.”

Throughout the miniseries, we learn how the FBI set up an electronic surveillance device in the car of Salvatore Avellino to get access to all the conversations that erupted between the members of the Maranzano, Profaci, Mangano, Luciano, and Gagliano families (now known as Bonanno, Colombo, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese). It also demonstrates how the young trial team exposed the audacious “Concrete Club” scheme by shifting their focus on the murder of boss Carmine Galante and gaining enough evidence to prove that it was ordered by The Commission.

The series also showcases how the jury passed the verdict after days of building pressure on the media and the system. In the end, the archival footage shows the eight mobsters, including three godfathers, getting convicted for their crimes, as the team and the rest of the New York heaves a sigh of relief.
