Frederick Steven “Freddie” Roach was born on March 5, 1960, in East Dedham, Massachusetts to parents Barbara Roach and Paul Roach. He is a 57-year-old American boxing trainer and former professional boxer. He is known by nicknames Master Roach, La Cucaracha, The Choir Boy. His father, Paul Roach trained him along with his brothers Joey and Pepper right from a very young age.
He has been the boxing coach to many well-known boxers like Manny Pacquiao: eight-division world champion, Miguel Cotto: four-division World Champion, Julio César Chávez, Jr.: WBC Middleweight Champion, James Toney, Georges St-Pierre, Jose Benavidez, Peter Quillin and Vanes Martirosyan. He also trained Lucia Rijker: two-time world champion and women’s champion and Amir Khan: a junior welterweight champion who won IBM light welterweight champion of 2011 under his training.
As a boxer he has won a lot of matches, his best one being June 11, 1982, at Boston Garden. His best pay was $7500. He boxed in weight categories Featherweight, Super featherweight, Lightweight and turned a pro in 1978. The Boxing Writers Association of America voted him as the trainer of the year six-times in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2013. He began to show signs and symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and hence was forced to retire at an early age of 26 years and is taking care of his disease by injections, medications, and exercises when training of boxers.
After his retirement, he took up various jobs like being a busboy and did telemarketing in Las Vegas. In 1991 he started his career as a trainer to Mickey Rourke and later started Wild Card Boxing Club and also started a gym in Los Angeles using the gym equipment given to him by Rourke.
He produced TV series based on himself released in 2012: “On Freddie Roach” having 6 episodes. He was a boxing consultant in “Bleed for This” in 2016. HBO Boxing is a TV series documentary from 1988-2016 in which Freddie is seen as a trainer in various episodes.
