Gilbert Baker was an American artist who was responsible for designing the rainbow flag, which is now, associated with gay pride and various LGBT causes. Born on June 2, 1951, he served in the US army for two years, and he passed away in 2017. Bakes was always openly gay and never tried to hide it from anyone. He first designed the rainbow flag in 1978. While working for the Paramount Flag Company in San Francisco, he worked on numerous displays including the Premier of China, the presidents of Venezuela and France, king of Spain among others. Several revisions have been made to the flag wherein two colors were removed for expediency but were later added again based on their availability. There was a hot pink stripe on the rainbow flag that had to be removed before the mass production was to begin since the fabric was found to be rare and costly. In 1979, before the Gay Freedom Day Parade, the turquoise was eliminated as well.

In 1994, Baker created the world’s largest flag to commemorate the memory of 25th anniversary of Stonewall Riots. On the completion of 25 years of Rainbow Flag’s creation, he created a Rainbow Flag which covered the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean in Key West, and later he divided into pieces and distributed the flag among more than one hundred cities.

On March 31, 2017, Baker died of heart causes in his home in New York. He was only 65 years old at the time. He was described as “helped define the modern LGBT movement” by California, the state senator. Originally consisting of eight layers, the Rainbow Flag has now been reduced to six stripes. Baker’s work is displayed at many museums throughout the country. The sewing machine on which the original rainbow flag was produced is displayed at the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco.

Baker was also a subject featured in the documentary Rainbow Pride, and also he designed an original version of the Rainbow flag for the Oscar-winning movie “Milk” in 2008. The movie starred Sean Penn in the lead role who also won an Academy Award for his role.

In 2017, a mini-series named When We Rise was created by Dustin Lance Black where Gilbert Baker was portrayed and his character could be seen sewing the Rainbow Flag. He goes on to explain the reason behind each color on the flag. Baker breathed his last in New York City aged 65 in March 2017.
