Grand Blue Season 2: Premiere Date, Characters, Plot

Grand Blue or Grand Blue Dreaming (also known as Guranburu in Japanese) is a comedy anime television series which is based on a manga series of the same name. Written by Kenji Inoue and illustrated by Kimitake Yoshioka, the manga series was first published in the good! Afternoon magazine on April 7, 2014, and new chapters are being published even to this day. A few years after the initial publication of the manga series, a Japanese anime studio called Zero-G announced plans to adapt it into an anime television series, and Season 1 of Grand Blue premiered on July 14, 2018. It was a hit among fans of the manga series and new viewers alike, and since then, fans have been waiting to hear news on a second season. Here’s everything we know about the prospects of Season 2 thus far.

Grand Blue Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?

Grand Blue season 1, consisting of 12 episodes, premiered on July 14, 2018 and ran till September 29 of the same year. In the time which has elapsed since then, a second season has not been announced and it remains to be seen whether Grand Blue gets a second season at all.

That being said, there’s no reason to worry just yet. Anime shows sometimes take five years to renew, hence, there’s plenty of time left for Zero-G to announce a second season. Further, new chapters of the manga series are still being published, so there’s no dearth of source material for a second season. Given these facts, we think that Grand Blue has a good chance of being renewed for a second season. If that happens, our best guess is that Grand Blue season 2 release date could be sometime in 2021. We’re keeping our ears open for news on Season 2 of Grand Blue, and we’ll update this section as soon as we hear something reliable.

Grand Blue Plot:

Grand Blue is a comical slice of life anime television series and is set in the seaside town of Izu, which lies to the west of Tokyo.

The show follows a fresh-out-of-school youngster named Iori Kitahara as he starts living his life as a freshman year student at the Izu University. At the same time, Iori moves into his uncle’s diving shop, Grand Blue, and encounters the members of the local Diving Club, who are buff men more intent on drinking and partying rather than diving.

When the members of the Diving Club see Iori, they quickly invite him to join them and drink. While Iori is unwilling and hesitant at first, he eventually gives in, and quickly becomes the life of the party, earning quite the reputation among the group. However, while Iori is drinking, his cousin, Chisa Kotegawa, enters at the wrong time, and finds him partying wildly. This lands Iori in trouble, but he remains determined to live his ideal college life filled with partying, good friends, and beautiful girls.

Grand Blue Characters:

Despite being a slice of life show, Grand Blue has a colourful list of characters. Below, we’ve provided you with brief backgrounds on the characters who are important to the plot of the show.

[WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD]

Iori Kitahara: The main protagonist of the show, Iori is a first year Mechanical Engineering student at the Izu University. With dreams of living his ideal college life, Iori moves into his uncle’s diving shop, Grand Blue, and encounters members of the local Diving Club. Despite being hesitant to join them in their partying and drinking activities, Iori soon becomes a loved member of the club, where most parties end with people getting drunk and naked. Despite being part of the Diving Club, however, Iori does not know how to swim, and requires help if he falls into water. On the other hand, Iori is an extremely skilled tennis player and excels at pretty much anything which requires precise aim.

Chisa Kotegawa: Another main character in the show, Chisa is Iori’s cousin and also a first year student of Mechanical Engineering at the Izu University. Despite being a member of the party-loving local Diving Club, Chisa is its most level-headed member and prefers to concentrate on her studies and actual diving instead of partying with the group. She also pretends to be in a romantic relationship with Iori so that other boys think her to be committed and leave her alone.

Kōhei Imamura: Also a main character in the show, Kōhei is Iori’s classmate and his chief rival. A hardcore otaku who crushes on girls all the time, Kōhei is distinguishable for wearing t-shirts with prints of his favourite anime girl characters on them. In fact, Kōhei’s dream at university is to run a harem of cute high school girls. As the show progresses, Kōhei is also roped into the local Diving Club despite being an Otaku. He also becomes obsessed with Iori’s sister while also being in love with an idol Kaya Mizuki.

Aina Yoshiwara: The final main character in the show, Aina freshman from Oumi Women’s College and a junior member of a tennis club called Tinkerbell. Aina is easily distinguishable for the amount of makeup she wears – a habit which earned her the name “Cakey”. Later, Aina also joins the local Diving Club on Iori and Kōhei’s recommendation, and afterwards, she develops romantic feelings for Iori.

Nanaka Kotegawa: Another cousin of Iori’s Nanaka is Chisa’s sister and the diving instructor of Grand Blue. Nanaka is shown to be an attractive and voluptuous woman who spends much of her time watching the members of the Diving Club drink and party. In spite of being Chisa’s sister, Nanaka appears to be infatuated with Chisa, although she later admits that her feelings for Chisa are only platonic. However, Nanaka isn’t completely against the idea of incest and says that if Chisa and Iori get into a relationship, she’ll support them.
