‘Greenleaf’ has had a lot of success in its past four seasons. The show first premiered on June 21, 2016, on OWN. Upon its premiere, the show received favorable reviews from critics as well as the audiences. It has been lauded for its talented ensemble, costume design, bold setting, and the sensitive handling of religious beliefs. Because of its immense popularity, the network has renewed the show thrice already. Now fans are waiting for the news on when will ‘Greenleaf’ season 5 release and what will it be about. Here’s what we know.
Greenleaf Season 5 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
‘Greenleaf’ Season 4 premiered on September 3, 2019, and concluded on November 5, 2019, airing ten episodes on OWN.
As far as the next season goes, we have good news. On November 15, 2019, the network announced the renewal of the show for a fifth season. Following the news of the renewal, Merle Dandridge took to Twitter to express her gratitude:

Even though no premiere date was revealed in the announcement, if we look at the release pattern of previous seasons of the show there is a gap of around eight to nine months between two subsequent season. Therefore, we can expect ‘Greenleaf’ season 5 to release sometime in August 2020 on OWN.
Greenleaf Season 5 Cast: Who is in it?
The stellar cast features ‘Crash’ star Keith David as Bishop James Greenleaf, the patriarch of the Greenleaf family, who is also the public-appealing leader of the Calvary Fellowship Church. Joining him as his wife First Lady Mae Greenleaf is Lynn Whitfield (‘The Josephine Baker Story’). Merle Dandridge steps into the character of Pastor Grace “Gigi” Greenleaf, Bishop and Mae’s eldest child, who is often taunted for bolting out during desperate times.
Lamman Rucker plays Pastor Jacob Greenleaf, Grace’s brother and Bishop’s only son. He is ambitious and holds a grudge against Grace for abandoning them and, therefore, ruining his dreams of pursuing pro-baseball. Kim Hawthorne appears as Kerissa Greenleaf, the head of Excellence Academy, and Jacob’s dominating wife.
The other cast members are Oprah Winfrey as Mavis McCready, LeToya Luckett as Rochelle, and Deborah Joy Winans as the youngest member, Charity Greenleaf. In season 4, the following actors – Patti LaBelle, who stars as Maxine Patterson, Rick Fox, who plays Darius Nash, and Beau Bridges, who stars as Bob Whitmore – appear as series regulars.
In season 5, we can expect all the cast members to reprise their respective roles.
Greenleaf Season 5 Plot: What is it About?
‘Greenleaf’ is the story of a single parent, Grace Greenleaf, daughter of Bishop James, who returns to her family home in Memphis, Tennessee, after 20 years. Grace is hellbent on proving to her family, that her uncle is a pedophile and a serial molester. Naturally, she is met with a mixed response from her estranged family, who also breaks to her, the devastating news of her sister Faith’s suicide.
In season four, we see how the Greenleafs stick together in the face of adversity that looms over their Calvary Fellowship Church. Grace and her mother, Lady Mae, map out a plan to reclaim their church from the clutches of Bob Whitmore and Harmony & Hope Ministries. Grace works towards their mission by using her position as the head pastor, while Lady Mae weaves her magic from the outside. However, a phone call threatens their whole plan.
In season 5, we can expect to see how Grace manages to fulfill her purpose while also dealing with the unresolved issues with her family members.
