‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ is an American food-based game show that airs on the Food Network. It is popularly called ‘Triple G’ and first premiered on October 20, 2013. The show is hosted by celebrity chef and personality Guy Fieri, which is where it gets its name from. Relativity Media is the production company backing the project.
Food is a topic ever-present in popular culture across the world, and there have always been essays, columns, and pages of literature, and hours of newsmedia, radio, and TV broadcast footage spent on an appreciation of food ever since these forms of media have existed. The huge plethora of shows on food items of all forms, including whole networks like Food Network exclusively dedicated towards the coverage of food-related shows, arises from the very fact that it is a niche that never loses an audience. The most popular rendition of any food-related show is a genre-mash between culinary and reality TV. And in this scene, Guy Fieri is nothing short of a cultural icon, and his ‘Guys Grocery Games’ also single-handedly dominates and defines the culinary TV scene of our times.
Needless to say, the refreshing take on the series has earned it a wide fan base, who enjoy the fact that a cooking show can be made so intriguing, considering the numerous shows that are already out there.
Guy’s Grocery Games Cast: Who is in it?
At the heart of ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ is, of course, the titular figure Guy Fieri. As mentioned earlier, Guy Fieri is possibly the biggest restaurateur-turned television game show host of our century, and it is likely that you have heard of him even if you do not watch food shows on TV. It is not, however, the twenty-odd eateries he has licensed his name to, his famous food joint in Times Square or the other three restaurants in California, or even his Emmy awards, but his rowdy, funky, and eccentric get-up and personality that makes him stand out so much.
As a matter of fact, Guy Fieri has been the face of Food Network in the current decade, with more than 15 shows under his belt. Naturally, ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ does not exist without him, and we will see more of him in the upcoming season too. Apart from Guy himself, the show has contestants who keep changing over the seasons. It is relatively easy to apply as well. Potential contestants have to go through a Skype interview besides submitting images of dishes that they feel reflect their best efforts as chefs. Considering these, members of the production team select the contestants and arrange for them to be a part of the show. Fieri also introduces three judges who are tasked with eliminating the contestants after they go through the challenges. While the judges are introduced at the beginning of the episode, they too keep changing over the seasons.
Guy’s Grocery Games Plot: What is it about?
‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ is about chefs competing with each other for a prize of $20,000 while they cook inside a grocery store.
The format of the show involves a set imitating a supermarket having 10 aisles stocked with a variety of food items ranging from frozen items to fruits and vegetables, farm-produced crops and poultry. In each episode, four chefs contest against each other in a three-round competition (each ending in an elimination) for a chance to collect up to $20,000 as prize money.
‘Guy’s Grocery Games’, as it features the largest name on culinary TV right now, is known for being a hub of tournaments with contestants coming in from different shows, even those of other networks. The show has already seen chefs coming over from ‘Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives’, and it also inspired a short-lived spin-off titled ‘Dessert Games’.
The game has multiple rounds, which start off with cooking challenges, and then move on to the bonus rounds where the contestants have to make use of ingredients from the superstore setup or answer questions to clues using the ingredients in the store. Some viewers might find this aspect of the show akin to another popular American game series titled ‘Supermarket Sweep’. However, ‘Triple G’ just kicks it up a notch, because it is not just about the ingredients here, it is about what you whip up using those ingredients.
The show has also included challenges and culinary quizzes over its expansive run, so basically they keep the contestant on their toes at all times. What really stands out is the personality of Fieri that holds the entire thing together. Fieri can dominate in front of the camera and be funny at the same time. Moreover, with the overload of action going on during the show, the audience is always on the edge of their seats, watching the challenges and quizzes unfurl with unraptured attention. This is where the success of the show lies.
Hopefully, in the upcoming season, the series will continue in a similar fashion and we will see Fieri giving a tough time to the competitors who have to keep their minds sharp and be on their feet if they wish to win the competition, not just by cooking well, but by thinking smartly. Overall, it is an enjoyable series and can be made even better by adding new challenges and tasks in the upcoming season.
