Created by Tim Federle, the series premiered in November 2019, garnering appreciation for the performances of the cast. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2 Release Date

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season 1 dropped on November 8, 2019, on Disney+ and wrapped up on January 10, 2020. The first season comprises ten episodes with a running time of 26-34 minutes each. Before the series even debuted, it was renewed for a second season back in October 2019.

Although the filming of season 2 commenced in February 2020, Joshua Bassett revealed that it had to be paused due to Covid-19-imposed restrictions, which could mean that the anticipated second season may not come as soon as you think it would. Meanwhile, you will be glad to know that a Holiday Special episode titled ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special’ will air on December 11, 2020.

Therefore, if everything goes accordingly, ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season 2 is expected to release sometime in 2021 on Disney+. It will consist of twelve episodes.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2 Cast: Who is in it?

The returning cast members for season 2 will include Joshua Bassett as Ricky, Olivia Rodrigo as Nini, Matt Cornett as E.J., and Sofia Wylie as Gina. Larry Saperstein steps in as Big Red, Julia Lester as Ashlyn, and Dara Renee as Kourtney. Frankie Rodriguez and Joe Serafini feature as Carlos and Seb, respectively.

Kate Reinders portrays Miss Jenn, who is the theatre teacher at East High School, while Mark St. Cyr essays the role of Mr. Mazzara. Barring few exceptions, almost all the above-mentioned cast members will return for the Holiday Special as well as season 2, with the possibility of more fresh faces.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2 Plot: What can it be About?

In season 1’s finale, the stage is all set up for the eventful opening night. E.J. has to step in for Ricky, who is upset that his mother got her new boyfriend along, which in turn gets Nini flustered mid-performance as she is surprised to see E.J. instead of Ricky. Eventually, Ricky and Nini get their moment on stage, while a talent scout is impressed with Nini’s skills. At the end of the show, Ricky confesses his love for Nini.

The confession leaves Nini torn between Ricky and her future at the performing arts school that the talent scout offers her a spot at. The finale ends with Ashlyn finally making a move on Big Red as the tech geek impresses on-screen with his tap dancing skills in an empty, confetti-filled gym. In addition to this, Ms. Jenn and Mr. Mazzara become the suspects for the theatre fire while Ashlyn finds a way to make Gina stay at East High.

Fans are in for a surprise this December as a 45-minute special episode will air on Disney+ called ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Holiday Special.’ The entire cast will reunite to perform their favorite songs from the holiday season. It will give a peek into what is coming in season 2, including a song written and performed by Joshua Bassett.

Season 2 will pick up from the ending of the first season. Auditions and rehearsals are going to be in full swing as the students prepare to stage ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ We can expect to see how Nini’s offer affects her relationship with Ricky (if she accepts it), or will Ricky and Gina become a thing? Now that everyone knows what a hidden gem Kourtney is, will we see her auditioning this time? Carlos and Seb and Big Red and Ashlyn will get more focus as we will also find out what is on the horizon for E.J. and Gina. We might also get to witness significant development in Miss Jenn’s romantic situation.
