Created by Tim Federle, ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ is a musical show inspired by the ‘High School Musical’ films. It follows a group of teenagers at the fictionalized version of East High School, who participate in the school theatre production of ‘High School Musical: The Musical.’ In the process, they bond with each other as they learn to navigate their relationships at school and home. On November 8, 2019, the teen drama first released on Disney Channel, Freeform, and ABC, simultaneously, before debuting on Disney+ on November 12, 2019.
The show quickly won over the viewers and proved itself a solid addition to the wildly popular franchise. The performances of cast members, particularly Olivia Rodrigo (Nini) and Joshua Bassett (Ricky), drew a lot of appreciation from the critics. The Disney series also made a mark with its inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters and storylines. As the second season comes to a close, you must be eager to know if the show will return with a season 3. So, here is everything we know!
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 3 Release Date
‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season 2 premiered on May 14, 2021, on Disney+, with the season concluding on July 30, 2021. The second season comprises 12 episodes that run for 26–33 minutes each.
As for the third outing, here is what we’ve gathered. An official announcement is yet to be made confirming the renewal or cancellation of the series. But there are some things that point to the possibility that the show might bag an order for another installment. Sources revealed that Olivia Rodrigo is committed to the series till 2023. This could mean that the teen drama has a shot at delivering at least four seasons, provided it continues to perform well.
Moreover, the cast members have publicly discussed the potential third season. In an interview prior to the release of season 2, the cast members spoke to Popsugar about what they wished to see their character doing if season 3 is greenlit. Joshua Bassett said, “I would love to dance more in season three. We have some great dances in season two, but I want to do more of that.”
Filming for season 2 reportedly began in February 2020 but was paused due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Finally, it resumed months later, in November 2020. Excluding the time lost because of the pandemic, six to eight months would have possibly been enough to complete the second season’s production. So, if the show checks all the boxes for renewal and is given the go-ahead for another cycle by Fall 2021, we can expect ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season 3 to release sometime in Q2 2022.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 3 Cast: Who can be in it?
The key cast members on the show are Olivia Rodrigo (Nini Salazar-Roberts), Joshua Bassett (Ricky Bowen), Matt Cornett (E. J. Caswell), Sofia Wylie (Gina Porter), Larry Saperstein (Big Red), and Julia Lester (Ashlyn Caswell). Others who play significant roles are Dara Reneé (Kourtney Greene), Frankie Rodriguez (Carlos Rodriguez), Joe Serafini (Seb Matthew-Smith), Kate Reinders (Miss Jenn), and Mark St. Cyr (Benjamin Mazzara). Therefore, most of these actors are likely to return for the third cycle if it happens.
Additionally, Alex Quijano (Mike Bowen), Olivia Rose Keegan (Lily), Roman Banks (Howie), Derek Hough (Zack), and Jordan Fisher (Jamie Porter) might also return. It would not be surprising to see several new actors join the mix if the show comes back for its third iteration.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 3 Plot: What can it be About?
In the second season, the tensions between East High and the rival school North High continue to rise. Both schools decide to stage ‘Beauty and the Beast’ for the spring musical and want to win the prestigious Alan Menken Awards for High School Musicals. After trying to make their relationship work, Ricky and Nini go their separate ways. However, Nini’s future looks bright as her musical career takes off.
If there is a season 3, the students of East Hight might be in their senior year. Miss Jenn could come up with an idea for another musical production like she always does. Nini might start making original music with Gina’s brother, Jamie. Moreover, things might start looking up for Gina and E.J. Who knows, Miss Jenn and Mr. Mazarra might finally get together.
