Preview: Homeland S08 E02

All good things must come to end, and some good things deserve a justified and timely end. ‘Homeland’ has been an effective post-9/11 (some critics have also called it post-post-9/11 fiction) war drama that has managed to consistently pair up personal, character-driven conflict with its larger, geopolitical theme.

‘Homeland’ began with CIA operative, Carrie Mathison’s suspicion of a U.S. Marine, Nicholas Brody having partnered with the Al-Qaeda. While that arc ended in the third season, the writers of ‘Homeland’ attempt to bring the series to a fruitful, circular conclusion in its last season.

The seventh season of the show saw Carrie being left in a rather disturbed state of mind after being denied her bipolar disorder medication by the Russians. Now, she finds herself being suspected of her loyalties to the government, in a fashion similar to Brody’s. “She’s now the one who is suspected — not only by the government, but a little bit by she herself. So it’s an interesting reversal, putting her in Brody’s shoes. It’s a poetic ending,” said showrunner Alex Gansa.

The first episode of the final season introduced viewers to the premise, highlighting what the eighth installment will revolve around. Once again, the central geopolitical conflict was highlighted, apart from the character conflict that would be wedded to it. Homeland Season 8 Episode 1 Recap:

The eighth season kicks off with Carrie undergoing recovery at a hospital in Germany. A federal agent named Jim Turro escorts her for an interview. She requests to be reinstated into the CIA, but Jim informs her that she failed her polygraph test. Jim is suspicious of her reliability, given the fact that she claims to not remember everything.

However, Saul visits Carrie and informs Jim that he needs her help. Previously on the episode, Saul had been in Qatar to negotiate a peace treaty between the Taliban and the Afghanistan government. However, the Afghan VP announces to the press that they would not be releasing any more Taliban prisoners. Hence, Saul is forced to offer the Taliban a faster release of Talibani prisoners in the United States.

Carrie agrees to go to Kabul to make the Afghan VP rethink his stance. She is assigned to work under the station chief, Mike Dunne. Soon, she goes to meet her contact, Roshan. However, Roshan’s wife tells her that Roshan had been killed and dragged through the streets by the Taliban. She blames the CIA and Carrie for Roshan’s death. Carrie starts to recall whether she might have compromised Roshan or not.

Carrie evades two men who chase her in an alley. Dunne is irritated at Carrie, telling her that he had sent two teams to locate her. Carrie asks whether the Russians are involved with the Taliban-Afghan negotiation but Dunne does not see any link and wonders why she has been thinking about that.

Before Carrie’s meeting with the Afghan VP, she sees Yevgeny Gromov leaving the VP’s office. Then, Carrie recalls that Gromov had been the man who tormented her in Russia. However, he is also revealed to be the man that Carrie had been hugging in Russia. She had been recalling her hugging someone in flashbacks throughout this episode and the identity of the person that she was embracing is revealed to be Gromov.
