Season 5, across its six episodes, takes a deep look at six baffling cases from the US crime files. The premiere episode explores the case of the Atlanta serial killer, who plagued the streets of the city from 1979 to 1981. What happened is, dozens of young black boys were discovered dead in woods, abandoned buildings, and rivers. The main suspect was a 23-year-old black man and part-time music producer named Wayne Williams. However, several families still felt that their children never got justice. The episode follows Atlanta Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms, who asks the police to reopen the 40-year-old cold case and crack it using modern forensics.
