Is How to Get Away with Murder Season 7 Cancelled?

How to Get Away with Murder Season 7

‘How to Get Away with Murder’ is a legal drama that follows a reputed criminal lawyer and professor Annalise Keating who recruits five efficient law students from Philadelphia University as interns in her firm. Their world turns upside down when they find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery. Created by Peter Nowalk, the thriller first premiered on September 25, 2014. It received a positive response from the audiences and critics for its gripping narrative, unpredictable twists, multi-faceted characters, and LGBTQ representation.

Because of her electrifying performance, Viola Davis became the first black woman to win an Emmy Award in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Throughout its run, the mystery drama has also garnered several accolades, including the American Film Institute Award for Television Program of the Year and multiple Emmy Awards. The show boasts a cult-following coupled with steady ratings that span over a total of six successful seasons.

Despite its success, ABC decided to pull the plug on the show after six seasons. You must be wondering: why was it canceled and if there is any chance that there will be a ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ season 7? Let’s find out.

How to Get Away with Murder Season 7 Release Date: Will it Happen?

‘How to Get Away with Murder’ season 6 premiered on September 26, 2019, and concluded its run on May 14, 2020, after airing 15 episodes. You can watch all the episodes on ABC.

As far as the possibility of another season is concerned, here’s what we know. On July 11, 2019, ABC announced that the sixth season of legal thriller will be its last. “Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do – as it did here,” series executive producers/showrunner Peter Nowalk said. “I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans.”

Here’s a goodbye post by Viola Davis, who plays the mastermind, Annalise Keating, on the show. In the caption, Viola expressed her gratitude towards the fans and the rest of the cast and crew members.

So unfortunately, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ season 7 is officially canceled. Bidding adieu to your favorite show is hard. But if we look at the bright side, we can at least be content with the fact that the creator was granted the opportunity to end the show on his own term. I mean, nobody would have appreciated a forced and abrupt ending.

On this very fact, Peter Nowalk told Deadline, “For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending. Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom.”

If you’re wondering whether it will come back in the future, the chances are pretty slim. However, I won’t be surprised if the Nowalk comes up with a spin-off, a few years down the line. Until that happens, you can always enjoy re-watching your favorite episodes or re-runs of the show.
