Created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, the oddly satisfying and profoundly moving HBO comedy-drama show is partially inspired by Rae’s web series ‘Awkward Black Girl.’ The story of the critically acclaimed show centers on an unlikely friendship between carefree culture geek Issa and career-oriented Molly to comment on the theme of African American female experience in contemporary society.
Since its premiere in October 2016, the show has spawned four seasons, garnering overwhelming fan praise and critical acclaim for its nuanced character sketches and endearing moments. After the near-perfect finale of a gloomy fourth season, you may want to know what’s in store for the upcoming fifth season. In that case, allow us to keep you posted.
Insecure Season 5 Release Date
‘Insecure’ season 4 premiered on HBO on April 12, 2020, and concluded on June 14, 2020. The fourth season comprises ten episodes with runtimes ranging between 27 and 41 minutes per episode. Let us now probe into the development details of the fifth installment of this celebrated show.
On May 1, 2020, the show was revived by HBO for a fifth haul. After a few months, on January 13, 2021, came the saddening news when HBO announced the show’s cancellation following the fifth season. Speaking to Deadline, the series lead actor and co-creator Issa Rae expressed her gratitude to the broadcaster. “Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end,” she said.
Filming for the fifth and final season commenced on January 21, 2021, and according to a post by the show’s official Instagram handle, the crew wrapped up production by June 13, 2021. Therefore, now it’s just a matter of time before we accompany our favorite characters in their final journey. Post-production will still take a few months more. However, we can safely expect ‘Insecure’ season 5 to premiere sometime in Fall 2021.
Insecure Season 5 Cast: Who is in it?
All of the main cast members will return to the set for the final chapter. Issa Rae will reprise the role of the jolly and jazzy non-profit worker Issa, with Yvonne Orji donning the garb of Issa’s old friend and confidante Molly. Jay Ellis will play the character of Issa’s long-time beau Martin Lawrence Walker, and Natasha Rothwell will be essaying the part of Kelli. Neil Brown Junior will slip into the shoes of Lawrence’s friend Chad, while Alexander Hodge will play the role of Molly’s boyfriend, Andrew.
Among other prominent cast members, we expect to see Wade Allain-Marcus (Tiffany’s hubby Derek), Lisa Joyce (Frieda), Y’lan Noel (Daniel), Jean Elie (Ahmal), Dominique Perry (Tasha), Lil Rel Howery (Quentin), Sarunas J. Jackson (Dro), Langston Kerman (Jared), and Jasmine Kaur (Aparna).
Insecure Season 5 Plot: What is it About?
The low-key fourth season has its different moods, but it begins on a happy note. Lawrence is finally getting his career settled, and Issa is thinking about moving with him to San Francisco. Despite having developed feelings for Issa, Nathan handles the news quite well. On the other hand, Molly is going through a rough patch as Andrew falls apart.
Meanwhile, Tiffany runs away, possibly in a bout of postpartum depression, and the friends come together to look for her. Tiffany reunites with Derek, but on their way back, they are held by the police. In the end, Lawrence drops the bombshell that he is going to be a father by his ex, and it’s ostensibly a lot for her to take. The season superbly wraps things up with Molly and Issa in their favorite restaurant, sitting face-to-face.
The cliffhanger season finale of the fourth season prepares us for what is to come. In all probability, after the news of Condola’s pregnancy, it is the end of Issa and Lawrence. On the other hand, Molly has to reflect on her life quite a lot. Also, aren’t we glad that Molly took the first step to reach out to her best friend? The moment of crises in both their lives may bring them together. Alternatively, striking a realistic chord, Molly and Issa may go their separate ways while staying in contact.
Both Molly and Issa have a lot on their minds, and the final season will unravel the final destiny of the protagonists. Issa may end up with either Nathan or Daniel, whereas Molly may move to another city for a job, but will Andrew follow? Tiffany is also going through a rough patch in her life, and the fifth season will hopefully see her cope better with her depression. Whatever the destiny of the characters may be, the final journey will be well worth taking.
