‘Liar’ (2017) is an ITV British drama series that saw its first season unveil a date between a school teacher and a reputed surgeon go incredibly wrong. What starts as a prelude to romance is the subject of psychological trauma, confusion, and victimhood. The series begins with Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey) starring as Laura Nielson, a school teacher who is ready to try her hands at something new after things ended with her ex. She meets Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) for a date that fast forwards to Laura, waking up with an unshakeable feeling that she was raped. This leads up to a case where Andrew has different viewpoints on what happened that night. At a juncture, when the audience is unable to decide what really went down, there are other characters who enter the mix to make it even more complicated.
The first season dabbles with Laura trying her luck at getting Andrew arrested for what he did, while also trying to get back to her normal life with less success. For an audience that is used to watching movies and TV series that revolve around date rape and rape culture, this mysterious take on who is telling it right could prove as a good exercise to keep it critical and not emotional. However, things turn down a dark road when the police officer, Laura consults, also end up being a victim of Andrew’s predatory habits.
Season 2 that came as a result of the first season’s success begins with a dead Andrew Earlham lying in the dirt. Speculations are high on who killed him with surmounting pieces of evidence that raises more doubts than answers until the very end. ‘Liar’ keeps it honest in its portrayal, especially concerning the inability of its victims to move on while the predator is also on the move from prey to prey. The narrative isn’t linear and uses the stream of consciousness technique to keep it real between memory and conviction. As a whole, too, the series uses time-lapse as an instrumental tool to keep the mystery of the plot alive.
‘Liar’ Season 3 Release Date: Renewed or Canceled?
‘Liar’ Season 2 premiered on March 2, 2020 and came to an end on April 6, 2020. The series ran its course raising obvious doubts of an upcoming probability of season 3. To many who invested hard and fast into ‘Liar,’ the answer may not be satisfactory as Season 2 is perhaps the end of it. Joanne Froggatt confirmed in her interview with ITV’s ‘This Morning‘ that Season 2 of ‘Liar’ is the last we’ll be seeing of it. When asked if the 12 episodes wrap up the series, Froggatt said:
“It is. This is the finale. Yes, there will be no more ‘Liar.’ It is official.”
Froggatt believes that the ending is quite satisfying. The ‘Downton Abbey’ actress is not new to her character being a rape victim. The series has amassed a viewership due to the sensitivity of what it is trying to convey. Though it is unusual that Froggatt confirmed its end and not Jack Williams or Harry Williams, it is enough at the moment to understand that ‘Liar’ season 3 stands canceled.
