“Hello Sir/Ma’am, I am calling from XYZ bank, we need you to verify/confirm your bank account details.” Sounds familiar, right? Several instances have occurred wherein we have dealt with calls inquiring about our account details, passwords, PIN, of our bank accounts, insurance, credit cards, and so forth. Such attempts to lure confidential data from the public is called phishing. Netflix’s latest original ‘Jamtara,’ tells the unbelievable true story of a group of young men caught in the web of running a phishing organization.
The show is set in an eponymous village in Indian state of Jharkhand and documents how a group of young men seeking opportunity and money, enter the world of crime. By narrating the story of two cousins, the crime thriller reveals the vicious side of the internet, the side-effects of political interference in a well-established business, and the power of money over relations.
Soumendra Padhi, who has received a National award for his biopic drama ‘Budhia Singh: Born to Run,’ is at the helm of the show. ‘Section 375’ and ‘Gold’ fame Nishank Verma pitched the concept, and Trishant Srivastava, known for ‘Nisha Aur Uske Cousins’ serves as the writer for the show.
The first season of ‘Jamtara’ grabbed a lot of eyeballs because of its hard-hitting premise, the authentic central theme, and a talented ensemble cast. Which brings us to the question: Will there be a ‘Jamtara’ season 2? Let’s find out.
Jamtara Plot: What is it About?
Labeled as the hub of India’s phishing attacks, Jamtara is home to many notorious fraudsters who resort to duping thousands of vulnerable people impersonating as representatives of various banks and insurance companies.
The Netflix original ‘Jamtara,’ is inspired by such cases. The show revolves around two cousins who are experts in phishing and lead a booming scam along with their friends. Their business becomes a center of public attention after a news agency runs a report on it. As a result, the gang grabs unwanted attention of political goons who now want a piece of their sweet success. A disagreement causes the cousins to end up on the two ends of the political divide. And therefore, chaos ensues.
Meanwhile, the local police authorities are on a mission to catch hold of the perpetrators. ‘Jamtara’ also highlights the perils of the internet by showing how we are just a fraud call away from losing all our hard-earned savings.
It is advanced with the tagline ‘Sabka Number Ayega’ which means “everyone’s time will come.” Clever wordplay.
Jamtara Season 2 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?
‘Jamtara’ Season 1 is all set to premiere on January 10, 2020, on Netflix. It consists of 10 episodes with a runtime of 40-50 mins each.
As far as the next season goes, here’s what we know. The good news for the fans is that the show was not conceived as a miniseries. Which is a clear indication that the makers wanted to continue the story forward. The popular Indian Netflix show ‘Sacred Games’, also based in crime, went on to be renewed for a second season. Our best guess is that Jamtara will also tread a similar path. You can expect Jamtara season 2 to release sometime in September 2021. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.
