‘Jane the Virgin’ has seen six successful seasons till now. But what about its next season? Here’s everything we know about it.

Jane the Virgin Cast: Who is in it?

The main cast of ‘Jane the Virgin’ includes Gina Rodriguez, who plays the role of the protagonist. Jane Gloriana Villanueva is a religious young Latina, and obviously a virgin as the title suggests. However, all of this changes when she accidentally becomes artificially inseminated. Andrea Navedo plays the role of  Xiomara “Xo” Gloriana Villanueva, Jane’s outgoing mother who had her when she was only 16. This prompts Jane to cling on to her virginity so as not to make the same mistakes her mother did. Although Gloriana is a dance instructor, she wants to have a career in singing.

Justin Baldoni plays the role of  Rafael Solano, the owner of the hotel where Jane works, and the biological father of the child Jane is carrying. The two are shown to grow closer to each other as the show progresses, and even develop feelings. Brett Dier plays the role of a detective Michael Cordero Jr., who has feelings for Jane as well and although was believed to be dead at one point, seems to be alive but suffering from amnesia. This is supported by a plethora of other actors who are extremely talented and bring the flavor to the show that draws audiences.

Jane the Virgin Plot: What is it about?

‘Jane the Virgin’ follows the story of a devout woman who has to deal with the fact that she was accidentally artificially inseminated. The story is set in Miami and viewers are made privy to the surprising and dramatic details that transpire in the life of Jane Gloriana Villanueva, who is a hard-working, young, religious, Venezuelan-American woman. Jane has a vow of remaining a virgin till her marriage, but all this goes for a toss when her doctor accidentally artificially inseminates her. What makes matters more complicated is the fact that the father is the owner of the hotel where she works. He is also a married man, a cancer survivor, and a former playboy. Jane’s heart has the additional problem to cope with, vis-a-vis, she used to have a crush on him. While the series initially focuses on Jane’s dilemma in choosing between the biological father and her detective boyfriend, the plot soon evolves to much more than that.

Jane has to balance motherhood with her normal life and has to bring up the child on her own. Being extremely pious by nature, Jane’s upbringing can only be described as strict and it is rather fun to see her try and enforce rules within the household while she is struggling for a semblance of normalcy in her own life. Further down the road, we see the hurdles Jane has to encounter in raising the child and how she is trying to advance her career as a writer. ‘Jane the Virgin’ also goes beyond just Jane to see how all the family members are expanding their own stories and building their lives.

What stands out most about the show is the degree of sensitivity with which it approaches the topic of motherhood. While retaining its humor, there is a tenderness and raw emotions that underline the plot of the show, be it in Jane’s decisions, or her romantic choices. It also addresses the wider issues of socioeconomic problems that immigrants like Jane face in the USA. Jane’s struggle as a mother as her child grows to a toddler is something that all who have given birth to a child can relate to while watching the show. Perhaps this why Variety did not spare any words in heaping praise upon ‘Jane the Virgin’, saying that the series, “is envisioned, edited and curated with great deftness and economy, and the fact that it is so entertaining and accessible should not preclude it from being at the center of conversations about the best the medium has to offer”.
