John Wick or the Baba Yaga, or the boogeyman, started his story as a man who was out to get revenge after his car was stolen and his dog was killed. The first movie firmly established his legend as a hitman – not exactly the boogeyman, but the person you sent in when you wanted the boogeyman dead. It also established the circle of assassins and the rules of the Continental Hotel, a haven for said assassins. The second movie furthered the legend, and ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ cements Wick’s name as one of the deadliest assassins we have had the pleasure of watching in movies.
A man of singular focus, determination and sheer will, he is adept at various hand to hand combat techniques, and if the man is infamous for having killed three people with a pencil, one can only imagine what he will do with knives, swords, and guns. ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ almost pushes John to the limit, stacking the odds against him, and the movie’s title echoes the famous Roman quote “Si vis pacem, para bellum”, which means “If you want peace, prepare for war”. That is exactly what John has to do, prepare for war on all fronts so he gets another shot at a peaceful life.
With intense action and gun-fu (which is a special mix of kung-fu using guns). ‘John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum’ is not a movie that you want to miss, and even if you have seen it, the visually engrossing action sequences make it worth a rewatch. However, before we tell you where to watch ‘John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum’, let us walk you through the plot of the movie.
What is John Wick 3 About?
The story of ‘John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum’ picks up less than an hour after the events of the previous movie ended. To refresh your memory, the assassins, and the Continental hotels, that is the safe havens, and various other networks are all controlled by the High Table. Killing a member of the High Table has its consequences, and Wick (Keanu Reeves) violates the rules, even more, when he kills a newly appointed member on Continental grounds. Thus, he is declared ‘excommunicado’ and a $14 million bounty is placed on his head. This builds up the pace in the movie as the protagonist is constantly hunted and is forced to go on the run.
Surprisingly, there are way more assassins than one would have expected, and everyone seems to be after John Wick, to collect the bounty. However, as the manager of the New York Continental puts it – with everyone gunning for John Wick, the odds of him surviving are about even. The master assassin heads to the New York Library, where he collects a marker (a token for a blood bond to repay a debt) and a crucifix. He runs into his first killer here, and if you thought books were only meant for reading, you have never seen John Wick use a book. He goes to the Director, someone from his past who operates a theater. Using the crucifix, he gains safe passage out of New York to Morocco, but not before he is branded to signify that he has used up all his favors.
In the meanwhile, the High Table does not sit idly and sends an adjudicator, who admonishes both Winston (Ian McShane), the manager of the New York Continental, and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), the leader of a network of vagrant assassins. They are asked to relinquish their posts in seven days, for having helped Wick kill a member of the High Table in the previous film.
Wick’s adventure continues all this time, and he reaches the Casablanca Continental and meets Sofia (Halle Berry), the woman who owes him a debt. She takes him to the former manager of the Casablanca Continental, Berrada. John seems to be looking for someone called the Elder, who is above the High Table, so he can make amends and get the bounty off his back. At Berrada’s there is a disagreement over one of Sofia’s dogs, and thus begins one of the most exhilarating fight sequences in the movie as they shoot their way out of this person’s kasbah. John finally does meet the Elder, when he is nearing death and swears fealty once again. Thus he is reinstated but it comes at a price. He has to severe one of his fingers as a show of loyalty.
Wick returns to New York, but before this, the adjudicator recruits a deadly assassin named Zero, and his students. Together they take out the people working for the Director and the Bowery King, and both these people are made to pay for assisting Wick, with the Bowery King being fatally wounded. Wick comes back on the condition that he has to kill Winston, and as he heads to the Continental, he is attacked by Zero and his men. He barely makes it to the neutral grounds, where Zero professes he is a huge fan of Wick’s. However, Wick rebuffs his advances. When John refuses to kill Winston, things go south really quickly. The adjudicator deconsecrates the New York Continental, thus removing its status as neutral ground. Zero and his disciples are free to kill Wick and Winston. To back them, two busloads of mercenaries arrive, heavily armed and armored.
Most of the Continental’s guards fall, but Wick and the concierge, Charon, manage to hold them off, using a variety of weapons, from handguns to assault rifles and shotguns. Finally, Wick has to take on Zero and his students, and there are long drawn out action sequences, where Wick kills all but two students and manages to fatally wound Zero. With the threat neutralized, the adjudicator has to make a parley with Winston but maintains that John is a threat. At this point, Winston turns and shoots John, who falls off the roof of the Continental, but his body disappears, and the adjudicator feels that the threat from John is far from over.
She might be right on her money, because the end of the film shows a possible team-up between the Bowery King and John Wick, as they prepare to take the fight to the High Table.
