Johnny Gill, born on May 22 in 1966, is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, and actor. He was the part of the famous group New Edition. Gill’s music career started in 1982, at an early age, when his childhood friend forced him to record a song.  This demo, when heard by the president of Atlantic Records, got immediately signed by him for his debut album and his first self-titled album was released on Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records. Gill then along with his childhood friend Stacy released their duet album Perfect Combination. In 1985, his second album, Chemistry was released on Cotillion Records.

Gill began his new journey in the world of music in 1987, when he was hired by an American famous rapper and singer, Michael Bivins to join New Edition. Bobby Brown had been evicted from the group and Gill was given the opportunity to replace and sing in place of Ralph Tresvant, who was believed at the time to be leaving to follow a solo career in singing. Gill along with another lead singer of the New Edition, Ralph Tresvant, who decided to stay with New Edition, released the album Heart Break, with the more mature and adult sound, hitting the charts with the songs like “, “N.E. Heartbreak”, “Boys To Men”, “Can You Stand The Rain”, and “If It Isn’t Love”.

Gill released a second self-titled album in 1990, which delivered the hits “Wrap My Body Tight” “My, My, My”, “Fairweather Friend”, and “Rub You the Right Way”. In 1993, Gill released another solo album Provocative, which gave the songs like “I Know Where I Stand”, Love Addiction and “Quiet Time to Play”. In 1996, Gill’s album Let’s Get the Mood Right, gained lots of appreciation and it was considered by many as one of his best albums. In 1996, after giving many solo albums, Gill rejoined the New Edition and recorded the album, Home Again.

In 2009, Gill appeared in the theatre play, A Mother’s Prayer, which also featured many big guns like Robin Givens and Shirley Murdock.
