‘Kakegurui’ is a live-action Korean drama which is based on the Japanese manga with the same name, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Naomura. Directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa, its first season was announced on November 21, 2017, and it follows the plot of the original manga’s first half. It premiered on MBS on January 14, 2018, and TBS’ slot Dramaism on January 16, 2018. Soon, it was commissioned for a second season, which is again based on the anime’s second half.
Kakegurui Cast: Who’s in it?
‘Kakegurui’ stars Minami Hamabe as Jabami Yumeko, who is the protagonist. She is joined by other main characters played by Mahiro Takasugi as Ryota Suzui, Aoi Morikawa as Mary Saotome, Taishi Nakagawa as Kaede Manyuda, Natsume Mito as Runa Yomozuki, Yurika Nakamura as Sayaka Igarashi, Ruka Matsuda as Itsuki Sumeragi, Natsumi Okamoto as Yuriko Nishinotouin, and Miki Yanagi as Midari Ikishima.
Mary Saotome is a headstrong and independent girl, the star of her class. But she loses in one of the gambling games and becomes a pet. Ryōta Suzui, a sweet, naive guy, is Mary’s classmate. There’s not much of a backstory on how he landed in Hyakkaou Academy and he doesn’t have a knack for gambling. Jabami Yumeko is the new arrival in school and quickly becomes friends with Ryota. She does not wish to follow the rules that have governed this institute for a long time.
Kakegurui Plot: What is it about?
‘Kakegurui’ is set against the backdrop of the Hyakkaou Private Academy, a school where kids of rich, influential political and business families come to study. However, this institute runs on a hierarchy system, where students are divided into sections based on their performance, not in athletics or academics, but in a series of gambling games. Those who give higher monetary contributions to the student council, rule the school. This, in turn, forms the backbone of a gambling system where students need to bet their fortunes against one another after class.
The winners get the option to be on the ruling side whereas the losers become slaves or pets. The elite rulers also earn more popularity, added connections, and prestigious status. On the other hand, the “house pets” have to function as per the whims of the leaders. If anyone is unable to clear his/her debts by the graduation year, he/she has to spend the entire future paying them off.
One fine day, there’s an unexpected arrival. A mysterious girl, named Jabami Yumeko is transferred to the academy. Although she appears simple and cute on the outside, she is a gambling addict and loves the thrill of taking calculated risks. Jabami does not gamble for financial or social benefits. She does not follow the existing rules or logic and has an uncanny attention for detail, which enables her to see right through gambling scams. After her arrival, the hierarchy of the school gets disrupted and this forces the student council to plot several schemes to take her down.
If you have watched the ‘Kakegurui’ anime, you would know that this live-action drama version follows a similar story arc, except for a few modifications. Most of the events and its action sequences seem to ring bells. The performances are really good, sometimes a tad overdramatic, but this is what makes this series more interesting. Quite an entertaining, fun, and enjoyable watch, it is engaging to see how Yumeko is able to effortlessly figure out the tricks of complicated gambling games. So, if you loved the parent anime version, then you should definitely check this one out.
Kakegurui Season 3 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Kakegurui’ season 2 premiered on MBS on April 1, 2019. Just like the original manga, it received a favorable response from fans, with many appreciating the live-action drama. Since the debut of its second installment, viewers already have been wanting to know if the show will be renewed for another season yet. Well, here’s what we know so far.
The second season of Kakegurui’s anime version aired in Japan from January to March 2019. After its finale, it left viewers hanging in the middle, after concluding on a cliffhanger amidst the election story arc. So, it is almost definite that a third season is on its way. Additionally, the manga series is still being published and hence, it has the scope to run for multiple seasons. The creators have already announced that as long as fans demand, they will continue to add new episodes to the series.
Now, if we go by the schedule for its parent source material, you should know that its drama version’s second season incorporates only up to the second half of the anime’s first season. Therefore, we are almost sure that it will get additional seasons. Considering everything, our best guess is that the live action ‘Kakegurui’ season 3 will premiere sometime in April 2020. We shall update this section as and when we learn more.
