Kevin Gates is of African- American and Puerto Rican descent, born as Kevin Jerome Gilyard on February 5, 1986, and his family moved to Baton Rouge short after his birth. He had a rough and tumultuous upbringing and even got arrested for the first time at the age of 13. He attended Baton Rouge Community College for a very short period at the age of 17. In the mid-2000s he started building his career by singing for a local label Dead Game Records alongside his fellow Baton Rouge inhabitants BoosieBadazz and Webbie.
