Thus goes the lines of George Michael’s song, when he was with Wham!. The romantic comedy movie borrows the title from the song since Michael had graciously given more of his unreleased music to the movie, making it an intensely enjoyable experience.
With talented cast members like Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding on board, the movie was always bound to be a success. It capitalizes on the Christmas cheer, which is already in the air, and all the hope that the upcoming season brings. We are told the story of a cynical Christmas store worker who meets an overly cheerful man and gradually starts to fall for him. Holiday love stories always emphasize how love brings out the best in us, and how each of us have the potential to be better.

‘Last Christmas’ is a tale that aims to remind us why we fall in love in the first place. We meet Kate, who is a Yugoslavian, for whom life has not been going too well. Kate tries to be like Fleabag, somewhat, but her actions lead to cute consequences, and not the catastrophic disasters visited on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character. That being said, Kate wants to be a singer but cannot seem to make it. Thus, she decides to take a job at a year-round Christmas store, where she dresses as one of the elves and does not seem to want to take her outfit off even after work.
Kate has several quirks and quickly gets on her boss’ nerves, who dresses up as Santa. Kate’s mother, too, is concerned about her daughter, but Kate does not seem too eager to take advice from her. The young woman is busy asserting how life is unfair to her for the most part and can be quirky and selfish at times. Kate has her own destructive tendencies, including isolating herself from her diminishing circle of friends. She tries to crash on a couch wherever she can find it, giving the appearance of a woman who is not putting roots down anytime soon. Moreover, Kate seems to drift between meaningless relationships, struggling to make the sustainable ones last.
Evidently, this is a woman who is cynical and is not easily taken in by the rose-colored goggles of love. All of this changes when she meets Tom, an extremely cheerful man, who takes an unnatural interest in Kate’s life. Their first meeting is clumsily cute. Kate notices him staring at a bird and when she joins him, the bird takes a dump on Kate’s face. Despite this, the two continue going out, gradually enjoying each other’s company all the more. Tom seems to show up whenever Kate needs him to and sees through all her misfortunes and personal failings. With unsolicited life lessons, Tom begins to win over Kate, while helping her break her bad habits to get her life on track.
‘Last Christmas’ combines what is best about love and life, giving us a movie that is sure to get us in the mood for holidays due to the tale of hope that shines through. The characters do their bit in heightening the overall experience and share a good chemistry on-screen. Geroge Michael fans are sure to love ‘Last Christmas’ even more thanks to the music.
