9. Grown-ish (2018 – )

ABC’s ‘Grown-ish’ is a spin-off series of the popular drama ‘Black-ish.’ Touted as a sitcom, ‘Grown-ish‘ follows the life of Johnsons’ eldest daughter Zoey Johnson, played by Yara Shahidi. Laurence Fishburne plays Zoey’s grandfather Pops, who appeared as a guest star in episode 11 of season 2 titled ‘Face the World.’ Along with Zoey’s dad Dre, played by Anthony Anderson, Pops visits CalU for Parents Weekend in the episode. The father and son have an awkward meeting with Zoey’s boyfriend Luca, played by Luka Sabbat. Freeform has renewed ‘Grown-ish’ for a third season recently. So, fans can expect more awkward visits from the Pops in the upcoming episodes. ‘Grown-ish’ is different from ‘Black-ish’ because Zoey is not a naive, selfie-obsessed teenager anymore. The other cast includes Deon Cole, Trevor Jackson, Francia Raisa, Emily Arlook, Jordan Buhat, Chloe x Halle, and Luka Sabbat among others. Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore are the creators of the series.

8. Black-ish (2014 – )

Johnson’s are among the most popular African-American families on the small screen now. The ABC sitcom ‘Black-ish’ has made them household names. As the series enters its sixth season, each member of the family has their own set of fan base. ‘Black-ish’ follows the Johnson family members Andre Johnson, played by Anthony Anderson, Rainbow Johnson (played by Tracee Ellis Ross), Zoey Johnson (played by Yara Shahidi), Andre Johnson Jr. (played by Marcus Scribner), Jack Johnson (played by Miles Brown), and Diane Johnson (played by Marsai Martin). Laurence Fishburne dons the role of Zoey’s grandfather, Pops. In each episode, the family discusses various socio-political issues with an engaging tone and educative style. ABC has recently announced that it is renewing ‘Black-ish’ for a sixth season. The sitcom is created by Kenya Barris.

7. #Freerayshawn (2019 – )

Sony Pictures TV’s ‘#Freerayshawn’ is the first Quibi series from a studio major starring Stephan James and Laurence Fishburne. According to reports, the series tells the story of an Iraq War veteran of African-American origin named Rayshawn, played by James, who is on the run from the entire New Orleans police force. While New Orleans PD and the SWAT team keep his hideout under siege, a good-natured cop named Steven Poincy, played by Fishburne, steps into the scene as a negotiator. The other cast includes Alyshia Ochse and Annabeth Gish.

6. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019)

The third installment of ‘John Wick’ franchise ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ features Keanu Reeves in the titular role of the iconic hitman. Laurence Fishburne plays the character of Bowery King, a deadly underground crime lord. According to reports, ‘John Wick: Chapter 3’ follows John Wick who tries to get out of New York as a bounty of $14 million has been announced for his head. Attracted by the huge chunk of money, top-notch professional assassins are on his tail. The other cast includes Anjelica Huston and Halle Berry. ‘Parabellum’ is helmed by the stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski. Derek Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams wrote the script for the film. ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ hits theaters on May 17, 2019.

5. Where’d You Go, Bernadette (2019)

Director Richard Linklater’s long-awaited comedy-drama ‘Where’d You Go, Bernadette’ is based on the novel of the same name by Maria Semple. The movie features Cate Blanchett in the lead role of Bernadette Fox, who is a Seattle based housewife. She lives in the midst of all the fortunes in the world including a loving husband, wealth and a genius daughter. But one day, she disappears without leaving a trace behind. Details regarding Laurence Fishburne’s role are kept under tight wraps. The other cast includes Billy Crudup, Kristen Wiig, Emma Nelson, Judy Greer, Troian Bellisario, and Zoë Chao among others. The movie is slated for an August 16, 2019 release.

4. Running with the Devil (TBA)

‘Returning with the Devil’ pits Laurence Fishburne and Nicolas Cage against a lethal cartel in the backdrop of hideous crimes of the drug underworld. The plot follows two agents, Cook, played by Cage, and The Man, a veteran drug dealer, played by Fishburne, who try to track down the disrupted cocaine supply chain owned by the cartel leader The Boss, played by Barry Pepper. The other cast includes Leslie Bibb, Adam Goldberg, Clifton Collins Jr, Cole Hauser, and Peter Facinelli. The drug trafficking thriller is written and directed by debutante Jason Cabell. No release date is attached to the project yet.

3. Brother’s Keeper (TBA)

Mel Gibson’s son Milo Gibson will be seen along with Laurence Fishburne in the upcoming sports drama ‘Brother’s Keeper.’ The plot follows the real-life story of the 2009 Abilene High School football team of West Texas. The team’s heroic journey to win the state championship against all odds is a legend. Fishburne plays the barbecue restaurant owner Harold Christian in the movie. The other cast includes Noel Gugliemi, Abigail Hawk and Glenn Morshower. ‘Brother’s Keeper’. The movie is directed by Todd Randall, based on the book by Al Pickett and Chad Mitchell.

2. Rendlesham (TBA)

Described as a paranormal series, Sony Pictures Television’s ‘Rendlesham’ features Laurence Fishburne in the lead role. The series is based on the real-life events occurred on a U.S. air base near the British village called Rendlesham. Set in 1980, a suspected UFO activity spreads panic among the villagers. Later, the incident was labelled as “Britain’s Roswell” by the media. According to reports, Fishburne plays Tyrone, a veteran airman of the U.S. Air Force who stationed at the U.S. base during the Cold War. A series of coincidental circumstances are forcing him to take control of the destiny of his family. Fishburne also executive produces the series along with Helen Sugland through their banner Cinema Gypsy. Eve Gutierrez and Jill Green also join the project as executive producers. The show is written and directed by Joe Ahearne.

1. Mixed-ish (2019 – )

‘Mixed-ish’ is a spin-off series of ABC’s popular show ‘Black-ish.’ The drama follows Rainbow Johnson, played by Tracee Ellis Ross in ‘Black-ish,’ who narrates her childhood as a kid in a mixed-race family in the ’80s. When little Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a commune to suburbs for better living conditions, their kids find themselves in the midst of a severe identity crisis. Bow and her siblings find it hard to cope up with a mainstream school where they are considered neither white nor black. Fishburne joins the project as one of the executive producers.
