‘Law and Order: Special Victims Unit’ or ‘Law and Order: SVU’ is the longest-running U.S. prime-time drama in history. A recipient of 90+ award nominations, the police procedural drama follows the activities of the fictional New York City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit. Created by Dick Wolf, the series draws its inspiration from real-life crimes that had created a media buzz and made their way into sensational headlines.
21 seasons in and counting, ‘SVU’ does not seem intent on breaking its record of spawning the maximum number of episodes to date. And with its 21st edition having wrapped up, read on to know all the details of ‘Law and Order: SVU’ season 22.
Law and Order: SVU Season 22 Release Date
‘Law and Order: SVU’ season 21 premiered on September 26, 2019, on NBC.
Its 21st installment had originally been commissioned for 24 episodes. However, due to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, almost all of the titles under the Dick Wolf banner were trimmed down to shorter runs. Even ‘SVU’ met with the same fate and production was halted during the filming of its 21st episode. Therefore, season 21 ended on April 23, 2020, after having aired 20 episodes. There will be no ‘Law and Order: SVU’ season 21 episode 21.
In February 2020, ‘SVU’ received a renewal order for three additional seasons. This means that we will not only get the 22nd edition but seasons 23 and 24 as well! Paul Telegdy, Chairman, NBC Entertainment, confirmed the news to Deadline, saying: “Dick Wolf has proven time and time again that he makes shows audiences love. We are delighted, excited and proud that as part of this epic deal with Wolf Entertainment, NBC’s loyal audience will know that their favorite shows have a certain future for the next three years.” The decision does not come as a surprise, considering the fact that the 2019-20 outing of ‘SVU’ was #1 in its Thursday 10-11 p.m ET timeslot.
However, owing to the ongoing health crisis, we expect a bit of a delay for filming to commence for the upcoming installment. Hence, it might not return to join NBC’s regular fall line-up this year. In all probability, ‘Law and Order: SVU’ season 22 should release sometime in 2021.
Law and Order: SVU Season 22 Cast: Who Can Be In It?
The cast of ‘SVU’ is led by Mariska Hargitay as Captain Olivia Benson, Kelli Giddish as Amanda Rollins, Ice-T as Sergeant Odafin Tutuola aka Fin, and Peter Scanavino as Dominick Carisi Jr. aka Sonny. Jamie Gray Hyder joined the lead cast as Officer Katriona Tamin in season 21. In season 22, all of the main stars are expected to make their respective comebacks.
Law and Order: SVU Season 22 Plot: What Can It Be About?
Since season 21 ended on an incomplete note, several planned storylines could not be aired in the finale. According to showrunner Warren Leight, the conclusion was meant to re-examine the death of Simon. He also mentioned that fans could have seen two important characters from previous seasons making a comeback.
Leight explained that some of these incomplete plot arcs might move to the new season. He stated during an interview: “We’ll use what still makes sense. I think the world will be different by the time we get back on air, and SVU will have to reflect that.”
