Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga: Everything We Know

The Lego series of licensed video games is perhaps one of the most consistent franchises in recent gaming history. The formula for these games is simple. A beloved fictional universe is adapted to video games in a clunky Lego aesthetic, granting players control of some of the most revered characters in modern popular culture, as they relive a more sanitized and jocular version of the source material’s storyline.

It’s a straightforward formula, but devastatingly effective, as evidenced by the popularity and ubiquity of the Lego games over the past two decades. One of the most popular film franchises of our times is ‘Star Wars’, and this popularity extends to the series of Lego-themed Star Wars games developed by British studio Traveller’s Tales.

Starting out with the original ‘Lego Star Wars: The Video Game’ in 2005, the series has since had five more mainline installments, including 2016’s ‘Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. Now, after the conclusion of the third Star Wars film trilogy, Traveller’s Tales is gearing up to release the definitive Lego ‘Star Wars’ game with the upcoming title, ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’. Read on to find out everything we know about the new game, and how it improves over its predecessors.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Plot: What Will It Be About?

Just like all the other games in the series, ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ is an action-adventure game presented from a third-person perspective and features a striking Lego aesthetic (which basically means that every character in the game is constructed out of Lego pieces).

The Steam page for ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ describes it as follows:
“The galaxy is yours with LEGO® Star Wars™: The Skywalker Saga! Play through all nine saga films in a brand-new video game unlike any other. Fly across space to the saga’s most memorable planets, in any order, at any time. A galaxy far, far away has never been more fun!”

As the name would suggest, the storyline of ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ follows the events of all three of the ‘Star Wars’ trilogies. This means that the game will feature all nine episodes starting from ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ to the recent ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’.

The original trilogy follows the adventures of Luke Skywalker along with his friends Leia Organa, Han Solo and Chewbacca as they take on the treacherous Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. The prequel trilogy follows Anakin Skywalker’s degradation from a noble Jedi to a wrathful Sith. Finally, the sequel trilogy takes place decades after the events of the original trilogy, this time focusing on Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Gameplay: What to Expect?

Despite treading familiar ground when it comes to the narrative, ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ is set to make some prominent changes to gameplay, the most immediately noticeable of which is the shift to an open-world hub system instead of the linear story progression found in previous ‘Lego Star Wars’ games.

Instead, now each episode features its own hub world populated by numerous planets, including iconic locations such as Tatooine, Anchorhead, Mos Eisley, Mos Espa and more. Many of the planets will be fully explorable and will feature iconic landmarks from the ‘Star Wars’ films. Sometimes while exploring one of the open-world hubs, the player could be accosted by random enemies, such as an Imperial Star Destroy flanked by numerous TIE Fighters.

Combat gameplay in ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ will also undergo a revamp, now with all-new combos with alternative Light attacks and Heavy attacks, and fresh new Force moves. All in all, players will have the option of choosing from over 200 playable characters in the game, which should cover nearly all the popular characters from all the movies.

Like its predecessors, ‘Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’ will feature support for local cooperative multiplayer, although we are yet to get confirmation of online multiplayer support.

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Developers: Who Are the People Behind the Game?
