Lin Manuel Miranda is a composer, lyricist, playwright as well as an actor of Puerto Rican ancestry and based in the United States. He was born on January 16, 1980, in New York City and grew up in the neighborhood of Inwood. He grew up in a family which included his parents Luz and Luis and an older sister Luz. During his childhood, he spent every summer for at least one month with his grandparents in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico. He studied in Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. Miranda began his professional career by revisiting “in the Heights” in 2002 along with John Buffalo Mailer and book writer Quiara Alegria Hudes. The musical went to Broadway after its off-Broadway success in March 2008. Its stellar performance earned them 13 Tony Awards, winning four including Best Original Score and Best Musical. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album in 2009. He went on to write the musical “Bring It On” in 2011 and earned nominations for the Tony Awards in Best Choreography and Best Musical categories.
Miranda has appeared in films such as “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” in 2012 by Walt Disney Pictures. He has also appeared on television in shows such as “Modern Family”, “Do No Harm” and “How I Met Your Mother”. Miranda has several TV credits that include the guest appearance he had made on the crime series The Sopranos in one of its episodes titled “Remember When”. He has made appearances in House, Sesame Street, Murray Has a Little Lamb. In the 2009 revival of The Electric Company, he served as an actor and a composer.
Miranda wrote the musical “Hamilton: An American Musical” in 2015 after he read the biography of Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow inspired him. It premiered off-Broadway in January 2015. He along with Chernow received the 2015 History Makers Award from the New York Historical Society.
Miranda is credited for creating the music of “Moana” (2014 and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015). Miranda is married to Vanessa Adriana Nadal and has two sons Sebastian and Francisco.
