‘Lovesick’ is a British sitcom television series that initially aired on Channel 4 and currently airs on Netflix, billed as a Netflix Original. Created and co-written by Tom Edge, the show has Ed Macdonald, Andy Baker, and Mike Grimmer as its other writers. It follows a man who has been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and has to inform his former sexual partners about his diagnosis.
Season 1 of ‘Lovesick’ premiered on Channel 4 on October 2, 2014, and subsequently it was made available on Netflix in April 2015. The show immediately made a splash among critics and viewers alike, and Netflix was so moved by its success that it commissioned a second season without the involvement of Channel 4. Following the renewal of ‘Lovesick’, Season 2 of the show premiered on Netflix on November 17, 2016. Once again, the show managed to impress both critics and viewers, and Season 3 followed with a premiere on January 1, 2018. Now, fans of the show are wondering whether ‘Lovesick will be back for a fourth season. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming season thus far.
Lovesick Cast: Who is in it?
In the show, John Flynn plays the role of the main protagonist Dylan Witter, an inept romantic with a history of casual relationships who gets diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease.
Daniel Ings plays Dylan’s best friend and flatmate Luke Curran, who is an irresponsible and shallow app developer, but is willing to go to any lengths for his friends. Antonia Thomas, meanwhile, plays Dylan and Luke’s friend Evelyn “Evie” Douglas, a sarcastic woman who appears to have underlying feelings for Dylan. Further, Joshua McGuire plays Dylan, Luke, and Evie’s friend from university Angus Baker, while Hannah Britland plays Dylan’s former partner, Abigail Saunders. Other members of the main cast include Richard Thomson as Evie’s fiance Malcolm, Klariza Clayton as stripper Holly, and Yasmine Akram as Maria “Jonesy” Jones.
Apart from the main cast, the show has dozens of recurring cast members playing minor characters who make recurring or episodic appearances. Additionally, new members are added almost every season to bring more depth to the story and the main characters.
In the event of ‘Lovesick’ getting renewed for a fourth season, we expect all the main cast members to make a comeback and reprise their roles – something they have done thus far. In fact, show creator and co-writer Tom Edge has repeatedly stressed on his desire to stick with the original cast members and explore their characters in detail. Given this fact, the return of the main cast members is almost guaranteed.
Lovesick Plot: What is it about?
In essence, the show revolves around a group of close-knit friends who share a house in Glasgow, Scotland. However, their lives take a surprising and unwelcome turn when one of them, Dylan, gets diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease called chlamydia. Left with no option but to confront the truth, Dylan not only has to come to terms with his own condition, but he also feels compelled to go out inform the women he’s slept with about his diagnosis. What follows is much hilarity and drama, and much of the story is told through flashbacks to give context to the ongoings in the lives of Dylan and co. in the present day.
The plot of Season 4, if it is commissioned, will be a continuation of the Season 3 finale, which potentially lets as many as four storylines take precedence. Luke’s new-found affection for Jonesy, and her perennial chastity from the complexities of relationships, Angus’ tempting business proposition, and Dylan’s unexpected meeting with Evie’s-ex put a lot on the plate for Season 4 to follow up with. While Season 3 tended to a more melancholic tone and touched upon heavier points, Season 4 can be expected to channelize its energies towards a lighter mood that allows the characters to have their stories, while also moving the story of the show ahead, which has been somewhat stagnant in the recent past.
In terms of reception, ‘Lovesick’ has done really well for itself with both television critics and viewers. Critics appear to have loved the show, and it boasts a stellar score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus for Season 1 reads, “Lovesick’s ribald premise is elevated throughout by an empathetic sweetness, carefully measuring both the blessings and curses left in the wake of failed relationships — STDs and all.” Among viewers too, ‘Lovesick’ appears to have struck a chord, and it boasts a solid rating of 8.4/10 on IMDb, based on over 12,000 votes.
Lovesick Season 4 Release Date: When is it coming out?
As it stands, Netflix has made no announcements pertaining to the possibility of a Season 4, and that really complicates things for us. On one hand, the show has demonstrated an unpredictable pattern in releases of new seasons, so deciphering a pattern and a release date for Season 4 is nigh impossible. On the other hand, Netflix does not publicly reveal viewership figures, so we have no idea how ‘Lovesick’ is doing in terms of viewership. Add to that the fact that British shows often have fewer episodes and fewer seasons than American ones, and we’re left with a very, very difficult prediction to make.
That being said, logic would point towards Netflix renewing the show, considering its popularity among critics and viewers. If logic prevails, then the show is bound to get renewed, and the question is not if but when. If it does get renewed for Season 4, we can expect the new season to release sometime at the end of 2019 or in the beginning of 2020. We will update this section when Netflix makes an official announcement pertaining to the future of the show.
While we wait for Netflix to make an announcement on the future of ‘Lovesick’, here is the trailer for Season 3 to give you a glimpse into the sitcom and the story thus far.
