It’s always fun to watch an anime in which a strong entity wears a “crown” and rules a bunch of people. But what’s even better is to watch the rise of an underdog who dreams of becoming a king one day. Take a young man with a troubled past, give him a supportive partner/friend and make him walk on a path towards a particular goal that will change his/her life forever; this right here is the recipe to cook the perfect motivational story. Very similar to this is the plot of ‘Unbreakable Machine Doll’, that follows the journey of a young man named Raishin who dreams of becoming the best Automaton Puppeteer one day. The story of the anime, though predictable, is extremely uplifting and engaging. It has some plot holes here and there but its overall “feel-good” vibe makes up for all of that.
The major standpoint for this anime is its two main characters who go through immense transformations throughout the 12-episode runtime. The depth of these two characters is very impressive and enough history of each of them is explored throughout the storyline to make their personalities memorable. Most of the side characters lack development but that is quite understandable considering the short runtime of the show. Even the art side of it is commendable, especially the character detailing. The action scenes are fine and are only a little off when CGI is involved. The sound is easily one of the best things about this anime, with music that ranges from soft symphonies to heavy guitar riffs featuring during action scenes.
Despite its peculiar pacing and other evident flaws, overall, ‘Unbreakable Machine Doll’ is quite enjoyable. It has its own moments of meaningless dialogues and fan-service, but if you try to focus more on the growth of the main character, you will be able to see a linear progression in the storyline. I would highly recommend this anime to any regular anime viewer because of its thrilling action, amazing art and also its hilarious romance/harem comedy. There is no doubt that ‘Unbreakable Machine Doll’ can actually do a lot better if it gets another season. Speaking of which, we might have some news regarding the show’s renewal in the next section. Unbreakable Machine Doll Season 2 Release Date: When will it premiere?
‘Unbreakable Machine Doll’ Season 1 released on October 7, 2013 and came to an end on December 23, 2013. Overall, the show was really well received by most viewers in Japan and because of this, most anime fans were expecting a new season soon after its release. But no announcements were ever made regarding its renewal and just recently, a new rumor about its cancellation has been sparked all over the internet.
Initially, the anime was doing really well and the possibilities of its renewal were quite high, especially after the surprisingly good 6-episode OVA that aired from December 25, 2013 to May 28, 2014. But now, after all these years, the hype around it seems to have faded and most anime viewers don’t even remember it anymore. Because of this, it seems very less likely that there will be a new season anytime in the future. Unbreakable Machine Doll Plot:
A new form of technology has been developed, which is known as “Machinart”. This technology is capable of magically giving life and intelligence to mechanical dolls that are termed as “Automaton”. Along with this invention, an institute name Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machinart was found, which is responsible for training puppeteers to control the mechanical dolls. As the number of dolls increases along with the number of puppeteers controlling them, the applications of these Automatons also grows and later they are also used by the military.
Raishin Akabane is one such aspiring puppeteer who wishes to be a part of the Walpurgis Royal Academy but he miserably fails at the entrance test. Every year, a battle between the best puppeteers takes place at the “Evening Party” and the only way Raishin can now earn a place at this event is by defeating one of the top hundred students who have already been invited to be a part of it.
With his humanoid Automaton Yaya, he challenges Charlotte Belew and her Automaton Sigmund to a duel, but before the battle between them commences, Sigmund is suddenly attacked by other students. Instead of taking the situation for granted, Raishin actually saves his opponent and decides to look for a different path that will grant him access to the “Evening Party”. Haunted by his tragic past, Raishin is determined to make his way to the top along with Yaya. In the end, it’s his willpower that will allow him to defeat every opponent in his way and will help him achieve the title of the “Wiseman” that will give him access to the forbidden arts.
Unbreakable Machine Doll Characters:
Raishin Akabane
Raishin Akabane is a student puppeteer from Japan who has come to England to study the art of Machinart at the Royal Walpurgis Academy. He is accompanied by his own Automaton named Yaya, who is a girl. He is a lean teenager with long black unkempt hair and sapphire eyes. He is usually seen in his Walpurgis academy uniform that consists of a white shirt with grey cuffs and black vest with a golden ring belt on grey pants. As an accessory, he also sports a grey colored armband on his right arm. He wears dark brown shoes and after being able to enter the “Evening Party”, he wears these fingerless Gauntlets that have second last written on them.
As a puppeteer, he is absolutely fearless and is determined to make something of his life. He has a strong sense of justice and he jumps right into conflict with an opponent who he knows has done something wrong. He might even take his enemy’s side temporarily just to protect him/her from harm’s way. He deeply cares for his Automaton Yaya and unlike other puppeteers, he perceives her as his equal and not as a slave. Yaya gets him into deep trouble a lot of times by passing mean remarks on other girls she’s jealous of, but even then, Raishin tries his best to understand her and is never rude to her. When he was a child, his family’s abilities as puppeteers were stripped away from them and they were all killed. In the present time, he believes that it is on him to avenge the death of his family members. With the help of Yaya’s strength and his own strong willpower, he is determined to succeed and prove to the world that what was done to his family was wrong.
Yaya
Yaya is an Automaton created by Shoko Karyusai and is known to be of the utmost quality. With Raishin as her puppeteer, she is known to be an expert in hand-to-hand combat. She is a beautiful girl with long straight black hair and scarlet eyes. She ties her hair on both sides of her head with black ribbons accompanied by really long red ribbons that reach her knees. She wears a traditional Japanese shrine, Maiden Robe, that is black in color. There is a red and white colored sash scarf on her waist and she also sports long sleeved gloves on her arms. Despite being so pretty, she always seeks Raishin’s attention and hates it when he goes on dates. She gets really mad at him for going on a date with Charlotte and to make up for that, Raishin buys her a new pair of boots.
Yaya’s emotions entirely depend on Raishin’s actions towards her and when he appreciates her by tapping her on her head, she feels really happy. But when Raishin does not do much, she feels really disappointed and sad. Due to her wanting to seek Raishin’s attention all the time, she uses her twisted sense of thinking to make him aware of her presence. But by doing this, she always ends up creating some sort of misunderstandings. But Raishin understands her and never takes these things too seriously. She even tries to creep into Raishin’s bed at night by claiming that as an Automaton, she will be able to recover faster if she sleeps with her puppeteer.
Due to her jealousy when it comes to other girls Raishin talks to, she often loses her sense of logic and ends up embarrassing Raishin in public places by doing something really stupid. But even then, Raishin never really gets mad at her and always understands the sentiments behind all of her actions. Her suspicion and distrust for other girls is really annoying but Raishin learns to live with it.
