Made in Abyss Plot

Commonly known as “the Abyss”, a mysterious giant hole harbors the remnants and creatures of a long-gone civilization. A town named Orth, which is built around the surface of the Abyss, accommodates several brave souls who dive deep and explore the dangerous layers of the pit. Known as Delvers, these mighty explorers are also quite cautious with their approach as “the Abyss” is known to be an unforgiving place that spares no one. The further a person tries to delve into the darkness of the Abyss, the more he/she gets prone “the Curse of the Abyss.” There are only a handful of legendary raiders, known as White Whistles, who have been able to cover half of its depth and have returned unscathed. One of the these legendary White Whistles turns out to be the Riko’s mother, Lyza.

In the first season of the anime, Riko ends up finding a robot-like human boy in the first layer of the Abyss. Much later, Riko also receives some messages from her mother who never really made it back from the bottom of the Abyss. To fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a White Whistle herself and to get a chance to meet her mother, she embarks on a journey to the bottom of the Abyss with her new human-robot friend, Reg. But as the two of them descend into the depths of the mysterious hole, they not only face ghastly ancient supernatural creatures but are also subjected to the “Curse of the Abyss.”

In the third movie, Riko and Reg further delve into deep into the Abyss and this time around, their new friend Nanachi joins them. As they make their way towards the fifth layer of the Abyss, they not even face some of the most dangerous fantastical creatures but also meet Bondrewd, another renowned White Whistle who is responsible for ruining Nanachi’s life. And though Bondrewd initially seems quite hospitable, no one can be trusted in the strange world of the Abyss.

It’s almost surprising that Riko and Reg have made this far despite being so inexperienced compared to the expert White Whistlers, but their journey is still far from over. The potential sequel of the movie will further explore their journey and will portray all the trials and tribulations that they have to go through to reach their desired destination—the bottom of the Abyss. And since the dangers of the Abyss only get worse with each layer, they’ll have to stick together and face some of the toughest challenges. And maybe, just maybe, if the next season or movie in line serves as the final installment of the series, we might get to see what truly lies at the bottom of the Abyss.
