How did Michael Richards earn his money and wealth?
Michael Richards is an actor, television producer, comedian as well as writer from the United States. He was born Michael Anthony Richards on July 24, 1949, in Culver City, California to William and Phyllis Richards. He lost his father at the age of two in a car accident. He was raised by his mother who never remarried. He studied and graduated from Thousand Oaks High School. In 1970, he was drafted into the United States Army and trained as a medic. He was stationed in West Germany. He was discharged from the Army honorable. He used the benefits of the G.I. Bill and enrolled himself into the California Institute of Arts. He graduated in 1975 from the Evergreen State College with a BA degree in drama. He continued to appear in student productions while being enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College.
Richards began his professional acting career in 1979 when he appeared in Billy Crystal’s first cable TV special as his first big break. He later appeared in “Fridays” television show in 1980. His next role was as janitor Stanley Spadowski in the comedy film “UHF” by “Weird Al” Yankovic. He made television appearances in “Miami Vice”, “Cheers” and made guest appearances as an accident-prone fitness expert with Jay Leno. His next major role came through “Seinfeld” in 1980 when he was cast as Cosmo Kramer. Although the show had a slow start it became one of the most popular sitcoms in the history of television. It was number 1 in the Nielson ranking when the show ended after its ninth season in 1998. He won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy series in 1993, 1994 and 1997 and won more Emmys than any other cast member on Seinfeld. After Seinfeld, he started his own show “The Michael Richards Show” in 2000 which he co-wrote as well as co-executive produced. It was canceled after a few weeks because of negative reviews and poor ratings.
Richards got embroiled in an embarrassing situation while performing at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, California on November 16, 2006. When he was disturbed in the middle of his performance, he shouted out racially charged abuses to black audience members. He later apologized at the “Late Show with David Letterman”. “For me to be at a comedy club and to flip out and say this crap, I’m deeply, deeply sorry. I’m not a racist, that’s what’s so insane about this.”, he said.
In an interview David Hoberman that gave, he remarked that ABC hoped Richards would be cast as Adrian Monk in the first ever series they had conceived, Monk. Richards would play a character with the obsessive-compulsive disorder but he refused the role.
Richards married Cathleen Lyons and they had a daughter, Sophia. He and Lyons got divorced in 1993 after being together for 18 years. He married his longtime girlfriend Beth Skipp in 2010.
