Mirai Nikki Season 2: Premiere Date, Characters, Plot

‘Mirai Nikki’ is the kind of anime that can be enjoyed by someone who isn’t put off by violence and graphic nudity. The story itself is quite interesting and right off the bat, it pulls you into its dark premise that is strongly driven by its wildly intriguing characters. One great thing about the anime is how subtly the character development of the two main protagonists takes place. Though the characters are your typical anime archetypes, their development is very well paced along with all the action that is there in the series. The form of storytelling here is loud and bold, which is complimented along with some glorious, inventive and gruesome violence. Because of all these aspects, the show turns out to be anything but boring.

However, there is also a big flaw with the kind of bold narrative that it tries to portray. Now let’s take ‘Death Note‘ for example: the more it dives deeper into strengthening the overall ante, the more it pushed itself to the absolute limits of appearing cool to the audience. ‘Mirak Nikki’ experiences the same with its portrayal of graphic imagery and reaches a point where things even stop making sense. Towards the end, a strain is visibly seen that makes it obvious that the anime is trying to stretch itself too far from where it initially started. So clearly, ‘Mirai Nikki’ is not a closely woven anime but even then, the plot holes that appear later during the show are not big enough to sink the entire story.

Even though the art is actually its strong point, there are times when its budgetary constraints become clearly visible. It becomes obvious that more emphasis has been put on the bloodbath scenes of the show because the others are downright mediocre. So in the end, ‘Mirai Nikki’ is the kind of anime that will either be loved by the viewers or it will make no sense at all; there is no “in between” If you’re the kind of person who likes to have a fair idea about where the plot of an anime is heading, then ‘Mirai Nikki’ may not be the right show for you. But if you’re open to bizarre changes and a lack of reasoning, then you will definitely enjoy it.

For me personally, I have a bittersweet relationship with the series and though I did enjoy the character development and animation, I did not connect with the plot and its absurdity put me off. Would I be willing to watch another season of ‘Mirai Nikki’? Definitely yes, but only during a weekend when I have nothing better to do. Speaking of which, all those who are looking forward to a new season, we might have news for you!

Mirai Nikki Season 2 Release Date: When Will it Premiere?

‘Mirai Nikki’ season 1 premiered on October 9, 2011 and ended on April 15, 2012 with a total of 26 episodes. This was followed by sequel OVA named ‘Mirai Nikki: Redial’, which was released on June 19, 2019. From what I know, ‘Mirai Nikki’ season 2 was never even planned at all because the end of the series is quite conclusive and pretty much all the unanswered questions of season 1 are answered in the OVA that serves as an epilogue. Though there may still be some hope for a sequel, I’m very doubtful about its possibilities. Our best guess is that in the unlikely scenario of the anime getting renewed, ‘Mirai Nikki’ season 2 release date could be sometime in 2021 or 2022. We will update this section as soon as we hear more.

Mirai Nikki Plot:

Yukiteru Amano is one lonely high-school kid who, unlike most others his age, has no talents and no interest in sports. The only thing he is good at is shooting darts and writing on his phone’s digital diary. He spends his entire day making conversations with two of his imaginary friends; one of whom is Deus Ex Machina, the god of space and time and the other one is Deus’s servant named Murmur. One fine day, the Deus turns into an actual entity and offers Yukiteru a diary that describes the events of the future in grave detail. This new discovery forces him into a battle with 11 others who possess the same diary.

The last man standing out of all the diary holders will eventually get to replace Deus Ex Machine as the god of space and time. Yukiteru soon partners with another diary holder named Yuno Gasai, who is obsessed with him. She assures him that she will keep him safe throughout this battle, but there may be a lot more to her than what can be seen initially and her obsession for Yukiteru might have some hidden dark agenda.

This is then followed by an OVA that revolves more around Yuno Gasai and explores all the unanswered questions about her that have not been covered in the first season of the anime. ‘Mirai Nikki: Redial’ is not particularly great, but it does compliment the first season really well and also, it feels good to hear from the same old characters after all this while. So make sure that you do watch it once you’re done with the 26 episodes of season 1.

Mirai Nikki Characters:

Yukiteru Amano

Yukiteru, often referred to as “Yuki”, is the main protagonist of the anime. He is extremely anti-social and spends pretty much all of his time alone, reciting his not-so-happening life to his diary. One day, to his shock, his imaginary friend Deus turns out to be an actual entity who is a God. Deus offers him a diary and marks him as a contestant of a 90-day battle where 11 contestants must kill each other using their unique diaries. Yuki’s diary is named the Random Diary and allows him to get a detailed explanation of everything around him with reference to the present and the future. The problem with it is that it never shows him anything related to him, which makes him vulnerable. The notes in the diary are also written from his point of view, because of which certain events may not actually be as they have been described in the diary.

Yuki is a very kind-hearted person and unlike other participants of the game, he hates the fact he has to kill others to win. He keeps the killing part of it as a last resort and mostly focuses on his survival. But being the favorite contestant of the god himself, he becomes the prime target of all the other players. Yuki later befriends Yuno, who swears that she’ll defend him from others, no matter what. Her obsessive love for him does creep him out a little but he appreciates the fact that she’s trying to help him out because he is too weak to fight others all by himself.

Yuno Gasai

Yuno is a cute pink haired girl who is madly in love with Yuki for a reason that is revealed much later in the anime. Even her diary is named after Yukiteru and it closely describes everything that is going on with Yuki. The biggest flaw of her diary is that unless she is not around Yuki, it reveals nothing related to her present or future. But later, when the two become friends, both of their diaries compliment each other, thus fulfilling their individual flaws. Unlike Yuki, Yuno does not hold herself back when it comes to killing other contestants, especially when she has to protect him. She is really smart and is easily able to comprehend even the gravest situations without losing her calm. She carries a box cutter with her at all times but even then, she improvises with her use of weaponry shifting between kitchen knives, hatchets and other sharp objects.
