Directed by Jesús Braceras, the first season received widespread acclaim after its release. Now, in case, you are wondering whether there will be Monzon season 2, you are the right place. But before we tackle that question, let’s look into the details of the show.
Monzon Cast: Who’s in it?
‘Monzon’ features an impressive Argentine cast, comprising Jorge Román as adult Monzón and Mauricio Paniagua as young Monzón. Carla Quevedo plays Alicia Muñiz, Celeste Cid portrays Susana Giménez, and Diego Cremonesi enacts the role of the prosecutor, Gustavo Parisi.
Monzon Plot: What is it about?
‘Monzón’, narrated over 13 chapters, is the dramatic biopic about the former world champion Argentine boxer, Carlos Monzon. An idol during his professional years, Monzon was reduced to an infamous murderer when he ended up killing his second wife and Uruguayan model, Alicia Muniz, on February 14, 1988. The series chronicles the formative years in the life of this famous personality and highlights his most important events — starting from his childhood, his entry into the boxing ring, and his rise to international fame. Later episodes narrate the story after his arrest that kept people in suspense — regarding the aftermath of police investigations. The series concludes by highlighting how Monzon was finally found guilty and sentenced to 11 years.
‘Monzon’ is narrated through flashbacks, by flicking between the central character’s arrest in 1988 (which is the present) and his former days before the incident. The tale begins by first introducing Monzon as the prime suspect in the murder of Alicia Muñiz. Then we are taken back to 1959 when a young Monzon believes that love and violence are parts of the same emotion. It is during this time that he meets Pelusa. Again, in the present, Monzón testifies before prosecutor Gustavo Parisi. There are contradictions in his statement and he is arrested. In 1960, Monzon gets a chance to leave his life of poverty when Amílcar Brusa agrees to train him. In 1963, Monzon marries Pelusa and receives the first great news that would kickstart his professional career in boxing — to fight at Luna Park.
Coming back to 1988, we follow Monzón as he is transferred to the Batán prison and is denied the request of visiting his son. Flashback to the 60s and Monzon gets the golden opportunity to face world champion, Nino Benvenuti, who is defeated by the newcomer and Monzon makes his way to become the next middleweight champion. In the present, Attorney Patricia Roselló takes up Monzón’s defense. As the case progresses, it is revealed that a muscle from Alicia Muñiz’s neck is missing.
Back to his past and we meet Monzon, who is now without work and vents out his frustration on Pelusa after returning to Santa Fe. He again resumes his career and stays undefeated within the ring, but the WBC removes his belt. Furious, he decides to resign from boxing. Things take a better turn and Monzón gets a chance on the big screen where he starts shooting a movie, ‘La Mary’, with Susana. On-screen romance soon finds its way into reality and the sensational news makes to the front pages of all leading tabloids.
In 1977, we witness Monzon finally resigning from boxing after defeating Rodrigo Valdez. This is when he meets Alicia and after a few dates, they decide to start a new life. But their happiness is short-lived when the boxer starts directing his violent behavior from the ring toward his wife. Alicia leaves with her son but later returns with hopes of reconciliation. However, her dreams are shattered when Monzon strangles Alicia and throws her down the balcony.
In 1988, Monzon’s case is now under pressure from political and media personnel, asking for a quick verdict. The prosecution demands 18 years in jail while Monzon finally decides to testify, going against his lawyer’s advice.
